Kiwoko Hospital

Kiwoko Hospital Kiwoko Hospital is a not-for-profit mission Hospital in rural Uganda. "We treat, Jesus heals"

In 1988 a young Irish Physician found himself at the scene of devastation of two civil wars, surrounded by evidence of recent genocide and the despair of people robbed of the means of rebuilding their lives. The beginning was humble - a clinic under a tree - but the seed was soon to grow and gradually, a modern hospital took shape. (Ian Clarke tells this dramatically in his book, 'The man with the key has gone').

Our latest hospital newsletter was published at the end of last month. It contains plenty of encouragement and also outlines some of the challenges faced by patients, staff, and the community.

We've shared just a couple of the pages here. For the full newsletter, head to the Friends of Kiwoko Hospital website (www.fokh.org.uk) or for immediate download click:https://www.fokh.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/KH_Hospital-Newsletter_Apr-2026.pdf

Today, we concluded a week-long surgical camp conducted by surgeons from the University of Cincinnati/Head and Neck Outreach and Uganda Cancer Institute.

The camp was focused on Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeries. Such specialised and major surgeries usually cost a fortune elsewhere - not just in terms of money, but also waiting time as patients wait 1-2 years to have their cases handled by such expertise.
The surgeries usually last between 3 - 12 hours as some procedures involve transplanting blood vessels and flesh from one part of the body to another.

In addition to restoring the quality and longevity of life for the patients, many of the procedures will also impact patient’s self-esteem and confidence as significant abnormal growths on the head or neck are corrected.

We are grateful to Dr. Chad Zender for leading the team from the University of Cincinnati/Head and Neck Outreach and to Dr. Jeffrey Otiti for leading the team from Uganda Cancer Institute.

These partnerships help Kiwoko Hospital work towards its mission of providing accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare to the rural population.

We still have patients receiving nursing care and recovering in the wards and in the High Dependence Unit for the next few days before they are discharged to fully recover from home.

We also thank the hospital team who have worked tirelessly to support this camp.

We wish our lovely guests journey mercies back home.

The hospital in Uganda was able to run a medical camp alongside gospel outreach at a church over the Easter period, this included offering eye healthcare services to the local community. Please pray that those who attended will have been blessed by the support they received and that they may come to know the Lord through the words they heard.

Progress starts with the basics: water, health, hope, and community. When we work together, even the simplest tasks become extraordinary.

EASTER MEDICAL CAMP
We held a two-day medical camp at Nakaseke in conjunction with Nakaseke Christian Care Church.

On day one (Wednesday), we cared for 167 patients. On day two ( Thursday), 174 patients attended.

The adult and peadiatric patients received a wide range of services, including general consultations, eye examination, dental examination, nutritional assessment and examinations, laboratory tests and counselling.

Most importantly, the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ was preached. Dr. Stephen Stonelake shared the word at a crusade that was held to mark the close of the 2-day medical camp, and 15 souls gave their lives to Christ.

We are happy to have been able to treat such a multitude of patients, to touch not only their bodies, but their minds, spirits and souls too.

A special appreciation to all the staff that spared their days off to attend to this activity, as well as our partners who offered financial support. Your help goes a long way in ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible by all who could only think of it as a luxury!

Last Wednesday, the Eye Community Outreach team travelled to Nakasongola (nearly 100km each way). A team of 11 seen over 150 patients. The Gospel was also shared, and 7 people have their lives to Christ. We are thankful to Ballygowan Presbyterian Church, who, through support and encouragement, enable this outreach to continue.

Yesterday, we officially welcomed our friends from Hilfe Fur Kiwoko, Germany, to the hospital.

The team arrived in Uganda on Sunday morning and have been visiting institutions whose partnership will be beneficial and helpful in improving patient care at the hospital. Along with the Business Manager and Principal Nursing Officer, the team visited the Association of Ambulance Professionals on Monday and The Palliative Care Unit, Hospice Africa and St. Francis Hospital Nsambya on Tuesday.

The team also joined our Eye Community Outreach on Wednesday and had a hospital tour on Thursday. It has been a busy but interesting week for the team

This Friday (today), we shall be discussing our projects: completed projects, ongoing projects, and future projects.

We are very thankful to Hilfe Fur Kiwoko for their support over recent years. We are happy to host the team and hope that they enjoy the time they spend with us!
