Early Intervention and Support for Children with Down Syndrome

Early intervention is one of the most powerful tools we have to support children with Down Syndrome from the very beginning. These early years are a time of rapid brain growth and learning — and providing the right support helps children build strong foundations for lifelong development.

Through Early On Michigan, families can access free early intervention services for children from birth to age three. These services are tailored to each child’s unique strengths and challenges and may include speech therapy to support communication, physical therapy to strengthen muscles and coordination, and occupational therapy to build everyday skills.

Early intervention also empowers parents and caregivers. Specialists work with families in their homes or familiar settings, showing how to integrate developmental strategies into daily routines — like using play, feeding, and story time as opportunities to practice important skills. This hands-on approach helps your child learn naturally while feeling supported and loved.

As your child grows, ongoing support continues through individualized education plans, specialized therapies, and connections with community resources. Each step ensures that your child receives the care, encouragement, and opportunities they need to thrive.

With early and consistent support, children with Down Syndrome can reach milestones at their own pace, communicate their needs, form meaningful relationships, and develop independence and confidence.

Every child has incredible potential — early intervention simply helps unlock it.
