One of the biggest myths I hear is: “If you have ringing in your ears, you just have to live with it.”

Here’s the truth: tinnitus is common, and while we can’t always “turn it off,” we can help turn down how much it takes up space in your day.

One of my favorite parts of what I do is helping people put words to something that can feel really hard to explain. Tinnitus can be exhausting, especially when it’s quiet, and your brain won’t “turn it down.”

If you’re feeling frustrated, worried, or exhausted, you’re not alone. Many people wait to bring it up because they assume nothing can be done. 🫶

We’ll take it step by step: we’ll talk through what you’re noticing, check your hearing, and build a plan that feels realistic and manageable, so you can get back to focusing on life instead of the ringing. 🧩

Did you know that all hearing aid batteries can be recycled? You should never throw hearing aid batteries in the household trash or recycling bin!

These button cell batteries contain heavy metals that can leak into the environment. Instead, recycle them at drop-off points in your area.

This small step makes a big impact. Thank you for helping us keep our community (and environment) a little bit healthier. 💚

Important safety reminder: Button batteries are extremely dangerous if swallowed, especially by children. Please keep both new and used batteries stored securely and out of reach. If a battery is swallowed, seek emergency medical care right away.

🌟 One thing I’ve learned in audiology is that hearing loss doesn’t just change how someone hears, it can shape how you move through the world. Not because it’s easy, but because it often builds resilience, self-advocacy, and a determination you can’t teach in a classroom.

I wanted to share an article about Ava Pruden, a 17‑year‑old swimmer who embodies exactly that!

Ava was diagnosed with significant hearing loss as an infant, yet she grew into an award‑winning athlete who competes on the world stage. She talks openly about how her hearing loss made school transitions harder, how she had to learn to speak up for what she needed, and how those challenges ultimately made her stronger.

That mindset is something I see so often in my own patients, the way hearing loss shapes confidence, identity, and grit.

What struck me most was how Ava uses her experience to create change. She adapts in the pool with visual cues, she brings ideas back from the Deaflympics to improve accessibility for her team, and she’s already thinking about how to advocate for others. 🏊🏻‍♀️ She even wants to become a pediatric audiologist so she can support kids who are walking a path similar to hers!

As an audiologist, I find stories like hers meaningful!

Ava’s story is inspiring, but it’s also familiar. I see versions of it every week. And it’s one of the reasons I love what I do. 🥰💞

Spring Refresh 🌷👂

Spring isn’t just for cleaning your home. Your hearing aids deserve a little love, too! Dust, moisture, and wax buildup can affect sound quality, so regular cleaning is key.

💡 Tip: Wipe your hearing aids daily with a soft cloth and use your cleaning brush or wax pick to remove debris. Schedule a professional tune-up a few times a year to keep everything working perfectly. A little spring refresh goes a long way for clearer hearing!

“Hearing aids won’t really help.”

Many patients come to us believing that hearing aids will not make a noticeable difference. Often, this belief is shaped by outdated technology or experiences from years ago. What surprises many people is how quickly they begin to notice improvements once they are properly fit.

One of the most common changes patients report is being able to follow conversations with family more easily, especially with children and grandchildren.

Research has also shown that treating hearing loss is associated with a lower risk of long-term cognitive decline compared to leaving it untreated.

Supporting your hearing supports your overall well-being and connection to the people you love. 🫂💛

TV volume creeping up is one of the most common ways hearing changes show up. 📺

A patient came in recently and told me, “My family keeps saying the TV is too loud, but I think the speakers are just bad.” They were a little skeptical, and I get it. It can be hard to notice changes when they happen slowly.

Honestly, I have been that person in other areas of life. I did not realize I was turning things up until someone pointed it out.

So we talked through what they were noticing at home, then we checked hearing and reviewed what it meant for everyday listening. Often, the issue is not that the TV is quiet. It is that certain speech sounds are harder to catch, so the brain asks for more volume.

The best part was the small wins. They told me the TV volume came down, conversations at home felt easier, and the evening felt more relaxed! If you have noticed the volume creeping up or you are relying on captions more than you used to, we can help you get clarity on what is going on! 🙌

I was at dinner with my family and realized I was doing my usual “noise math,” picking the seat where conversation feels easiest. 😅

That’s the thing about hearing: it’s not just ears… It’s brain work.

Research links untreated hearing loss with higher risks of cognitive decline, falls, and depression. The ACHIEVE trial even found that hearing intervention was associated with 48% less cognitive change over 3 years in older adults!

That’s why we focus so much on brain health at Schwab Audiology and why follow-up visits matter! Small adjustments can make a big difference. ✨

Parkinson’s disease is often thought of as a movement disorder, but it can also affect how the brain processes sound. 🧠 Many people with Parkinson’s experience difficulty understanding speech, especially in background noise, even when hearing levels seem normal.

These listening challenges may increase with age and as the disease progresses. Monitoring hearing early and considering amplification when appropriate can help reduce listening effort and support clearer communication. Protecting hearing health plays an important role in staying connected and engaged in daily life. 💬

April Fools’ is all fun and games… unless you miss the joke.

Hearing well means more than just catching sounds. It means staying connected to conversations, laughter, and the moments that bring us together.

That’s no prank!

⏳ Hearing aids don’t need to be replaced every year.

Most hearing aids last 3–7 years, and often longer with proper care. Consistent at-home cleaning and a few in-office tune-ups each year can help protect your investment and keep your devices working their best for years to come.

A little maintenance goes a long way. 👂💚

A patient told me, “I just avoid going out now. It is too loud anyway.” 😔

Restaurants are one of the first places people realize they are working way too hard to keep up. In difficult listening situations, your brain is straining to fill in missing words; it is exhausting.

I have felt that kind of fatigue in a noisy room, too. You can hear sound everywhere, but it still feels hard to follow the conversation that matters.

So when patients come in with this particular issue, we build a plan that focuses on clarity, comfort, and realistic expectations, not just turning things up. 🙅‍♀️

The small win this particular patient reported later was huge. They stayed at dinner longer, felt more confident, and stopped doing the constant guessing and smiling!

If you have been avoiding restaurants or group gatherings because listening feels like work, you are not alone. 🍝🍹 We can help!
