Medicare Supplement vs. Medicare Advantage: What’s the Difference? We get this question all the time!!! Let me explain the difference:
Medicare Supplement (Medigap):
Works with Original Medicare (Parts A & B).
You can see any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare — no networks.
Comes in secondary to Medicare and helps to pay or cover entirely your deductibles and coinsurance after Medicare pays their portion.
Does not include prescription drug coverage - you’ll need a separate Part D plan.
Typically this has a higher monthly premium but lower or no out-of-pocket costs when you use your healthcare.
Many people find it easier to budget their healthcare costs while providing the most freedom and flexibility.
Medicare Advantage (Part C):
Replaces Original Medicare with a private plan approved by Medicare.
Often includes extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and prescription drugs.
Usually uses provider networks (HMO or PPO), so you may have to stay in-network to get the lowest costs.
May require prior authorization or other utilization management tools when seeking medical services.
Typically has a lower monthly premium but higher out-of-pocket costs as you use services.
You must live in the plan’s service area.
✅ In short:
Supplement = More freedom, higher premium, lower costs when you get care
Advantage = Lower premium, extra benefits, but network restrictions and more cost-sharing.
