A portion of schools and staff have not paid attention to the last 100 years of news from top educational leaders, dyslexia experts, education research, concerned families or emotionally distraught students. However, some school staff have listened to celebrities as that seems to get more attention.

Let’s hope Jamie Oliver can help more educators understand why each student with learning differences deserves to have teachers who will understand, support, fully educate and value them.

Let’s hope more educators will expand their own fund of knowledge and stay up -to-date on education news far beyond work training. Society needs more teachers who know how to identify and support students with dyslexia.

Let’s hope more schools create a culture of neurodiversity rights as the current atmosphere has been educationally harmful .

You would THINK the schools could learn about dyslexia after 148 years. Too many educators thought this was optional. The Google search bar is 27 years old. Think about that.
It’s time to get rid of the very outdated mindset of teachers thinking they only have to learn in college and from work training. Not having the skill or will to learn more on their own has made a portion of educators lightyears behind in their fund of knowledge. Lifelong learning is a lifestyle and not a paid job benefit. People who teach kids to learn should be able to learn more on their own. Even looking up “ struggling reader” will bring up volumes of information on the internet.

It takes four times longer to intervene in 4th grade than in 1st grade.
The longer we wait to identify a child that struggles to read, the more intervention, time, money and remediation is needed, not to mention the impact that waiting may have on self esteem and mental health.
Early identification of reading difficulties and evidence based structured literacy intervention is essential.
Don’t leave reading to chance!
Don’t wait. Close the gap.
