Like many people, I yo-yo dieted for a while, but always found myself stuck on plateaus or worse, gaining the weight back. 🤦‍♂️

8 years ago I took on a different approach to weight loss. I was less focused on calories and carbs, being more minded on creating health.

The more we learn about the medicinal powers of spices, the more possibilities come into focus regarding use of spices for health.

Anti-Inflammatory Spice Blend can be used during cooking or can be sprinkled right on top of a finished dish. It’s versatile and forgiving, so feel free to leave out any ingredients you aren’t crazy about.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

These conditions include increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

Metabolic syndrome is often linked to & exacerbated by insulin resistance and a state of inflammation in the body.

In a study where 40 subjects all with metabolic syndrome, consumed raw crushed garlic 2 x day for 4 weeks, components of metabolic syndrome were significantly reduced including:

🔵 waist circumference
🔵 systolic and diastolic blood pressure
🔵 triglycerides
🔵 fasting blood glucose
🔵 increased HDL (good) cholesterol

Through lifestyle changes and medications, metabolic syndrome may be able to be reversed, reducing your risk of developing a more serious health condition

When you consume more of the plants on the gut health food list you keep the good gut bacteria happy. When they’re happy they can support your body in multiple ways. Good gut bacteria

> aid digestion and extract additional nutrients
> strengthen the intestinal wall and offer protection against pathogens
> improve immune function

This is important, because, our GI tract is where we get our nutrients from. We need those nutrients for cell function, repair and growth. No nutrients, no life.

The gut is, much like the skin, a tightly regulated barrier. Its basic function is to keep pathogens out of the body and let beneficial nutrients into the body. When there are more bad bacteria than good ones this barrier function is damaged. This can lead to the barrier getting more “leaky”, letting in pathogens into the blood stream (this is where the term “leaky gut” comes from).

The pathogens then trigger the immune system and from there can affect negatively all systems in your body from nervous to reproductive. You do not want the immune system to be overly active and inflammation running high at all times inside your body.

So, no, to the person who asked, the gut microbiome is definitely not a myth and therefore what we do eat truly matters.

Around 90 percent of Americans will be eating turkey this coming Thanksgiving. At some point after the meal, many will want to dose off. You've probably heard that the reason lies in a turkey's high levels of L-tryptophan, which makes you drowsy.

Is L-tryptophan in turkey a sleep inducer?
Before we answer, let's explain what this compound is. L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid. Essential means that it is not produced or synthesized by the human body, so we need to get it from food. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein.

Among its various uses, L-tryptophan is used by the body to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter that improves mood and sleep quality. Serotonin is also required for the production of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep cycles.

Based on the above, it would make sense that L-tryptophan in turkey is indeed what makes one yawn incessantly on Thanksgiving afternoon.

Except that that there is no more L-tryptophan in turkey than in chicken. In fact L-tryptophan is found in other meats, fish, and eggs as well.

So what does make people so tired after the Thanksgiving meal?
The answer is rather simple and intuitive. People tend to stuff themselves silly with lots of food. The digestion process is prolonged. It requires a substantial energy allotment from the body, leading to a feeling of lethargy.

Additionally, people consume a fair amount of wine or other alcohols with their holiday meal. Alcohol slows the brain down, leads to relaxation and sleepiness.

Excess food plus alcohol. A double whammy for someone who wants to stay awake.
