Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, starting November 1, SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) emergency benefits will be paused and WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) benefits will pause on November 8. Both PA and NJ will continue processing SNAP applications and case updates during this time.

We know that many of our patient families and community members count on these programs, and access to healthy food is essential for everyone.

There are some spook-tacularly adorable babies in our Harriet and Ronald Lassin Newborn/Infant Intensive Care Unit (N/IICU)! One of our favorite annual traditions, our N/IICU staff helped some of our tiniest — and mightiest — patients choose the perfect Halloween costumes. From ketchup and mustard to pumpkins and little mice, it was a real treat to see all the cuteness. 💙 Happy Halloween!

Today is the very first Noonan Syndrome Day of Celebration, a day to celebrate patients around the world like Zoey. When she was 10 months old, Zoey woke up wheezing. Her family rushed her to the local emergency room and eventually transferred her to CHOP. Once at CHOP, Zoey was diagnosed with Noonan syndrome, a genetic disorder which can cause short stature, heart defects, bleeding problems and changes to the skeleton.

In addition to numerous lifesaving procedures, CHOP has also provided Zoey’s family with a level of expertise that her local hospital couldn’t. Today, Zoey is continuing to thrive with the support of her family and treatment team. Catherine and Casey were ecstatic when they learned they were expecting after a long IVF journey.

But at 13 weeks, they received difficult news — their baby, Amelia, had a giant omphalocele, a rare birth defect where some organs develop outside the body. The family’s doctor in the Cayman Islands knew Amelia would need highly specialized care not available locally.

Determined to give their daughter the best possible chance at a healthy future, Catherine and Casey turned to The Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at CHOP, where they found the expertise — and hope — they were searching for.

Eight-year-old Dottie has a rare condition called Aicardi-Goutières syndrome that affects her brain and immune system. She and her family recently flew all the way from Indiana to see Dr. Adeline Vanderver in our multidisciplinary Leukodystrophy Center—but someone important didn’t make it onto the plane… her beloved comfort buddy, Teddy!

Luckily, Teddy’s travel plans just ran a little behind. Thanks to some extra TLC (and his very own airline ticket), Teddy made an overnight journey straight to our hospital. Nurse Katie delivered him right to Dottie's arms, showing off just how far he’d traveled to be there. 😍

When Dr. Beverly Coleman started her career in radiology in the early 1970s, ultrasound was still a curiosity. The machines were massive, occupying entire rooms, and the images they produced were fuzzy and ghostly. Expectant mothers were wheeled in for a glimpse of the mysterious shapes on the monitor. Few imagined that one day, that same technology — now portable enough to hold in your hand — would help redefine what was possible in medicine.

As Dr. Coleman soon retires from her role as Director of Fetal Imaging at The Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at CHOP, we celebrate a trailblazer who redefined her field, shattered barriers, and helped generations of families see hope where there once was uncertainty.
