May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month.

Did you know hearing loss can affect a child’s speech and language development, academic achievement and social skills? Our audiologists conduct comprehensive hearing evaluations and diagnose and treat children with hearing loss from birth until early adulthood.

Some children who are diagnosed with hearing loss benefit from being fit with a hearing device (such as a hearing aid, bone conduction hearing device or cochlear implant). Fitting of hearing technology allows a child to hear and understand more clearly, and early treatment leads to the best possible outcomes.

Throughout 2026, we’re celebrating the many “firsts” that have made CHOP a world leader in pediatric healthcare. Today we’re highlighting The Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at CHOP’s Garbose Family Special Delivery Unit (SDU).

The SDU is the world’s first birth facility exclusively for mothers carrying babies with known birth defects, and its team has delivered the largest number of critically ill infants in the nation. More than 7,550 babies have been delivered in the SDU since it opened in 2008.
