Although patients with disordered consciousness after severe are often assumed to have poor long-term quality of life, Drs. John Whyte, Amanda Rabinowitz, and co-authors challenge this belief in this recent TBI Model Systems study. Among 887 patients, about half regained the ability to self-report on quality of life and psychological health measures by 1 year post-injury, and those who did generally reported life satisfaction, anxiety, and depression levels comparable to people with less severe injuries and even the general population. These findings highlight that meaningful recovery—including good psychological well‑being—is possible years after injury. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42093198/

During Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we want to celebrate the societal contributions of individuals with Asian and Pacific Islander ancestry and also reflect on some of the unique challenges they face. We're pleased to highlight recent research from Dr. Umesh Venkatesan and colleagues that aims to characterize outcomes after brain injury in Asian American and Pacific Islanders. Earlier this week, Dr. Amanda Rabinowitz gave an invited presentation as part of the National Academies' TBI Forum Workshop on Mental Health After Traumatic Brain Injury - From Evidence to Integrated Care. This gathering brought together leaders in brain injury research, policy, and clinical care to identify the key barriers, priorities, and opportunities needed to strengthen mental health support for people living with TBI.

Dr. Andrew Persichetti, Director of the Memory and Perception (MAP) Lab, studies how memory and perception systems support diverse cognitive functions. Using a combination of advanced methods, including fMRI, behavioral testing, and eye tracking, his research focuses on how people recognize and navigate different places, as well as how conceptual information about things in the world and abstract ideas are represented in the human brain. We are proud to announce that Institute faculty Dr. Amanda Rabinowitz will be a speaker at the National Academies' Workshop on Mental Health After Traumatic Brain Injury - From Evidence to Integrated Care that will be held May 11 - 12, 2026. The workshop will focus on how traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects mental health, and the evidence to date on why these issues can develop after TBI. Leading experts will examine how we can improve screening, treatment, and access to care for mental heath after brain injury and share practical solutions and research priorities to strengthen mental health support for people with TBI and their loved ones. https://www.nationalacademies.org/projects/CHPP-BHS-26-01

Over the course of her career, Dr. Laurel Buxbaum has worked with collaborators and trainees to make substantial advances in our understanding of how the human brain allows us to successfully use tools and how these processes can become disrupted following stroke. Dr. Buxbaum is Director of the Cognition and Action Laboratory. Research in Dr. Buxbaum’s lab has focused on how (and in which brain regions) tool-use information is learned, organized, activated, and selected.

Years ago, Dr. Andrew Persichetti attended an AFNI Bootcamp, and his experience there left a lasting impression. Taught by AFNI developers from the NIH, this intensive three-day course covers fMRI data analysis, from the basics to advanced methods. Dr. Persichetti was instrumental in organizing the recent AFNI Bootcamp in Philadelphia, and we're pleased to share highlights from the event in our latest blog article. https://rehabilitationresearch.jefferson.edu/news/2026/afni-workshop-2026.html
