Since opening its doors in 1997, Comfort & Care Medical has prided itself on being a family owned and operated business. The seeds of the company are actually rooted in a Sunday morning game of cards between a mother and her two daughters. During the game, Mary Pat Smith suggested her mother Nancy Fogarty and sister Elizabeth (Liz) Fogarty join her in opening a compression garment store. Having 12
years of experience in the field under her belt, Mary Pat spoke passionately and confidently about their ability to make it in the industry. Nancy and Elizabeth were excited and supportive, and so the women decided to pursue the dream. Little did they know that the idea would one day blossom into the area’s leading compression garment supplier. Heartache hit the family in June of 2000 when Nancy succumbed to colon cancer. Out of love and respect, Mary Pat and Liz named the private fitting room they supply for their patients ‘Nancy’s Room’. Her memory still lives on through her personal poems, which are displayed on the walls of the room. Although Nancy did not get to see Comfort & Care evolve into the establishment it is today, she played a large role in helping her daughters achieve their dream. Tragedy struck again in November of 2010 when Mary Pat was diagnosed with breast cancer. With a heavy heart, Liz took over the operations of the company while Mary Pat underwent treatment. Things began to look more positive as the winter progressed, but then in March of 2011 the sisters were blindsided when Liz was diagnosed with Leukemia. The sisters vowed they would beat these cancers together, and their bond grew even stronger during this trying time. But, Mary Pat and Liz were well aware that you aren't often dealt the hand you desire. In May of 2011, at 58 years young, Liz fell victim to leukemia and joined Nancy at the card table in the sky. Although Nancy and Liz are now in God’s heavenly grace, Mary Pat continues to pursue their mutual dream. The goal of Comfort & Care has always been to give patients the comfort and care they deserve during times of struggle. Today the company is driven more than ever to embrace all those who walk through its doors with open arms.
