As we celebrate Doctorsโ Day, weโre proud to spotlight Dr. Salvatore Carfagno, a dedicated OB/GYN who has been a solo practitioner at Advanced Care Ob/gyn since 2007. A graduate of Hahnemann University and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Carfagno also serves as an Associate Clinical Professor at PCOM, and mentors medical students, advanced practice providers, and local high school students aspiring to pursue medicine.
Dr. Carfagno says as an OB/GYN, he loves the ability to form long term relationships with patients and their extended families. โIโve taken care of moms and delivered their babies, and now those children have grown upโand Iโm delivering their babies, too. Few doctors get to experience that kind of long-term connection.โ
He also emphasized the variety in the field. โI get to participate in some of the most sacred moments in a personโs lifeโthe birth of a child. But itโs also a field that blends medicine, psychiatry, primary care, and surgical intervention, all within the context of womenโs health.โ

Dr. Carfagno tailors every patientโs care to their unique needs. โItโs important to look beyond medical charts and truly understand the person in front of you. For example, if I have a patient in her late 30s who had 3-4 pregnancy losses but desperately wants a child, rather that dismissing the issue as age-related, I take time to evaluate her and form a treatment plan so she can fulfill her dream.โ
He also recognizes the important role he plays in helping women with the emotional and psychological aspects of patient care.
โListening to what a patient isnโt saying is just as critical as diagnosing a physical condition. For example, if I have a patient who is experiencing emotional or physical abuse at home, I need to be able to pick up on that โI have to pay attention to body language and choice of words. All that goes into caring for a patient.โ
On that note, his best advice for patients? โAlways be honest and truthful with your doctor. Include your doctor in your life and donโt be afraid to tell them whatโs going on โ it leads to better care.โ

In late 2024, Dr. Carfagno began performing robotic-assisted gynecologic surgeries using the da Vinci Xi surgical robot. โI originally trained in robotic surgery years ago, but at the time, it wasnโt practical. Now, itโs a game-changer and helps me take care of patients with minimal downtime, minimal post-procedural pain and minimal scarring. Before Iโd have to make six-inch incisions for a cystโnow, I can accomplish the same results with just a few tiny holes. Patient satisfaction has improved exponentially.โ

For Dr. Carfagno, Shore Medical Centerโs Maternal Child Health unit is second to none. โI tell patients that at Shore, itโs like a village caring for them. Our nurses are incredibly compassionate, treating the mom, dad, and baby as a whole family unit. Plus, Shore offers 24/7 neonatology, OB/GYN, and pediatric coverageโan incredible advantage for higher-risk deliveries and ensuring the best care for both mother and baby.โ

Outside of medicine, Dr. Carfagno prioritizes family time with his wife and their three adult children, who all live in different locations. โTime is the most valuable thingโnot money, not cars, not houses. Itโs fleeting, so I focus on family events and moments outside of work.โ He credits his wife as his biggest supporter. โI couldnโt do this without her.โ
