Riverside Shore Home Health & Hospice organized a quarterly workshop, bringing together local agencies to network and exchange information about their services. This group is compiling resources to enhance community support. Renee Tyler, Riverside Volunteer Coordinator, highlighted the need for volunteers and the fulfillment that comes with volunteering. Talking about hospice with a loved one can feel overwhelming—but these conversations can also open the door to comfort, clarity, and compassionate care.

Here are a few helpful tips to help guide the discussion:

-Choose a quiet room, private time when everyone can be present and focused.
-Speak with empathy—acknowledge emotions and fears without rushing to solutions. Everyone shows their emotions differently respect each other feelings.
-Focus on what hospice offers: comfort, dignity, support, resources and the ability to spend more meaningful time together.
-Involve the Hospice care team—they can answer questions, explain options, and ease concerns.
-Remember to keep the focus on what is best for your love one and respect their wishes.
-You're not alone our team is there to help guide you, ease concerns, provide education, and continue support the family up to a year after your loved one has passed.

These conversations aren’t easy, but they can be a powerful step toward peace and providing the best care for your love one.

When is the right time for hospice care? This is something our team is able to help you to understand hospice eligibility and can assist families to make the best decisions about their loved one’s care.

Hospice is designed for individuals with a life-limiting illness who:
✔️ Have a prognosis of six months or less if the disease follows its expected course. (What happens if life extends after six months? Our team is able to continue assist if certain criteria are met.)
✔️ Are experiencing declining health with medical treatment.
✔️ Frequent hospitalizations or ER visits related to their condition.
✔️ Need increased help with daily activities like eating, dressing, or mobility.
✔️ Want to focus on comfort and quality of life rather than further treatments and frequent trips to the hospital.

Every patient’s journey is unique, and our team is here to guide patients and families through the process with compassion, expertise, and support.
