Yesterday’s light snowfall created a perfect natural gait lab.
As physical therapists, we often look at cadence, step length, and symmetry when analyzing walking. Fresh snow makes these patterns visible instantly. Footprints can quickly reveal whether someone is walking with balanced, consistent steps or showing asymmetry.
Changes in step length or rhythm can point to many underlying issues such as weakness, pain, balance deficits, or neurologic changes. Sometimes these subtle differences appear before a person even notices a problem.
Something as simple as walking in the snow can remind us how complex and beautifully coordinated human movement really is.
