Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
-Colossians 3:2

What are you thinking about? What thoughts dominate your thinking? As humans, we have a tendency to focus on our own lives and what is not going right. If nine people give you a compliment and one criticizes you, what do you focus on? We will focus on that one negative comment.

In Colossians 3:2 it says we are to set our minds on things above, not on earthly things. Why is that so important? God knows whatever we think about will ultimately determine our actions. My pastor has said: "We are spiritual beings in a physical body, not physical beings in a spiritual body." We are to set our minds on things above. Not that we don't need to think about earthly things, but they should not be our primary focus.

Paul encourages us in Philippians 4:8: Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. The NIV study note says: "Paul understood the influence of one's thoughts on one's life. What a person ALLOWS to occupy his mind will sooner or later determine his speech and his action." So, if we think negative thoughts, we will say and do negative things.

Proverbs 18:21 says: The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. A different version says: Words kill, words give life; they're either poison or fruit--you choose. This applies to our words to others, as well as ourselves. What we say to ourselves can be detrimental.

So, put into practice Philippians 4:8. And then, put into practice Proverbs 18:21. Speak life to yourselves and to others. If you are struggling with thinking, saying, or doing positive things--ask God to help you. Rest assured, he will!

Be careful about what you think. Problems come at us every day. We do have to pay attention to our problems. But we don’t have to dwell on them. Often times, we are consumed by our thoughts of our problems. Staying focused on what is bad will keep us in a negative state. We have to be intentional to “zoom out” and look at what is good in our lives. If you look for what is bad, you will find it. If you look at what is good, you will find it. Focus on the good and watch your life start to steer in that direction. Your circumstances will not necessarily change right away, but your thoughts, vision, and attitude will.

We use so much energy and waste a lot of our time on things that never happen. Ask yourself: Has this strategy worked for me? My guess is that it has not. You have used your imagination to imagine the worst. This often times will cause you to freeze and not make a move. Why not try thinking about what you want to do and then take action? If something comes up once you have taken action, then you can deal with it at that time.

No amount of worry will prevent the bad from happening. But most of what we worry about never happens. So free yourself from the fear of something happening. Flip the script: Imagine the best case scenario. This will instill hope in you and will reduce the fear you may feel. Then, you can take action—which feels better than inaction and staying in your fear.

When we go through hard times, it can be hard to be hopeful. You want to believe that things will be better, but there is this underlying fear that it will always be this way, that it will never get better, etc. This can cause you to feel hopeless.

God assures us in Romans 5:2b-5: “...And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, be we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.” We are to rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. God will get the glory in our situation—when we have come through on the other side of our situation. We are to rejoice IN our sufferings—not because of our sufferings. As we go through our sufferings, we are to remind ourselves that this suffering with produce perseverance in us (we will get through it with God’s help). This perseverance will produce character. We will grow through our situation. This character will produce hope in us that will not disappoint.

God reminds us in Hebrews 11:1 that “Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Think about those words. Being sure of what we hope for—even when you can’t think of how it will work out. Being certain of what we do not see—even when there appears to not be a way.

Hebrews 11:6 says: “And without faith it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those that earnestly seek him.” Come to God and present your requests to him. Believe that he will answer. This answer will come, although it may not be what you want. God knows what is best for you and knows the plans he has for you. Think about a time when you prayed for something that you really wanted and didn’t get it. You were disappointed at the time. But often times, you look back and are grateful you didn’t get it because God has something better. God will answer you, but most likely it will not be in your timeframe. This can be frustrating. However, you may not be ready for it or someone involved may not be ready. He is growing your character through the waiting.

It says in Romans 8:24-25: “...But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.” I love that! If we hope for what we do not YET have—that word instills hope! We are to wait for it patiently—expectantly. Don’t you feel the hope rising in you?

I love how God encourages us in Romans 15:13: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” While we wait for God to answer, we are not to be anxious, worried, doubting, or fearful. Allow the God of hope to fill you with all JOY and PEACE as you TRUST in him. Ask God and then turn it over to him. Don’t dwell on it, trying to figure it out, etc. We can have joy and peace in the midst of our situation. When you are joyful and peaceful, hope rises up in you. Then, we will overflow with hope. It won’t be us generating that hope. It will come by the power of Holy Spirit.

I pray this encourages you today if you find yourself in a place of waiting and/or suffering.

You can’t change the past. Worry cannot do anything about the future. Each of these things are impossible. When we are thinking of the past or dwelling on the what-ifs, we are entering the territory of overthinking.

You can only LIVE your life in the present moment. This is where change occurs. This is where growth happens. Stop overthinking and take decisive action.

When you focus on everything, it can paralyze you. Take some time to intentionally think and prioritize whst is absolutely necessary today. This gives you permission to just focus on the priorities. When you see what your priorities are for today, break them down into small steps that are not overwhelming. This can also help you cut through the “analysis paralysis” and actually TAKE ACTION!

“All wounds are relational.
So repair can only happen in relationship.

You cannot logic your way into wholeness (whatever that even means).

You cannot journal your way into safety.

Yes, inner work matters. But at some point real connection is required if you are to actually integrate.

Otherwise, it becomes a performance. A hyper-curated illusion of healing. A checklist. A brand.

‘Look how self-aware I am.
Look at my boundaries.
Look at how I cut off everyone who triggers me.
Look at how my feelings don’t own me.
Look at how good I am at being alone!’

Recovery in isolation isn't healing. It's coping. It's management. It's control. It’s avoidance of deep emotional engagement. It's a survival strategy dressed up as self-sufficiency. And while it might protect you from being hurt again, it also protects you from being truly seen.
