"One of the most common and heartbreaking regrets our founder Dr. Shoshana Ungerleider hears from people facing the end of life is this: “I wish I had asked my parents more—while I still could.” It’s a quiet ache that lingers. Not because we didn’t care, but because we didn’t know how to begin. The truth is, starting these conversations can feel overwhelming. What do you ask? When’s the right time? And what if the answers are hard?

But these aren’t just questions—they’re invitations. To understand our parents not just as caregivers, but as people shaped by their own hopes, fears, and untold stories. To create space for connection while there’s still time." End Well

Here's where to start—even if you’re not used to having serious conversations with your folks.

Once again it is artists that give us language/song/color/shape/story to grief.

Last night I went to the in Detroit, where and his friends lead us through an evening of film, music, comedy, story and conversation. The shared sorrow and hope for one another was palpable.

It was a beautiful embodiment of what I talk about “bearing withness” to our stories. That when we draw close to one another, name our losses, honor the tears, give space for anger, laugh at the ludicrous moments…this is how we weave the language of grief into our full story. Grateful to discover fellow creators of honoring the grief we all carry.

They still have a few more dates this year so check it out!

Life is stormy right now for many of us.

Personal losses.
Election stress.
Holiday anxiety.

A gentle invitation for your weekend…
• Name what feels sharp and heavy in your life
• Sit with it for a moment, suspending judgement or fixing it. Attuning to ourselves can begin to decrease our distress
• Practice a simple and calming exercise. When I notice I am anxious and in a hyperaroused state I find a soft space to pause, breathe, with a hand over heart to slow down my nervous body and soul. I soften my gaze, looking at beauty or turning towards a loved one and smile or share tears with them. Or I listen to calming music or sit outside and notice the birdsong, whooshing wind or rustling leaves.
• Engage in something that feels meaningful or playful.

Practice these daily rituals to keep you tethered in the midst of these stormy days.

With you 🤲🏻

As you encounter your grief, may you receive this invitation to tend your sorrows with a “courageous hospitality”, a welcoming that is compassionate and honest, a curiosity that is kind and patient.

Grief needs presence. And this can start by telling the story of your sorrows. All the honest layers and contours of your grief.

Name for yourself:
What have I lost?
What has changed?
How is grief showing up in my body?
What is my grief telling me I need?
What wisdom has my sorrow taught me?

You don’t need to make your story pretty or have a “happy ending”. We honor ourselves with honesty.

One of the ways we practice the embodiment of grief is to honor your body’s natural response to loss. Isn’t it wondrous that our body was designed to soothe pain through our tears.

If you are a mental health clinician in West Michigan, I invite you to join me for a six week journey where we will learn and integrate holistic approaches to grief. Link for registration is in the bio.
