Did you know athletes living with diabetes are at a significantly greater risk of sustaining stress fractures, sprains and other foot and ankle injuries than nondiabetic athletes? A key reason is that many athletes living with diabetes have neuropathy, the diminished sensation from nerve damage in the foot, and are simply not aware that they’ve been injured or have pain. Other foot problems associated with the disease can include poor circulation coupled with a compromised immune system that increases the risk of infection and the restricted delivery of oxygen and other nutrients to the affected area. This does not mean that athletes living with diabetes must stay away from sports and exercise. The point is that athletes living with diabetes must take special care of their feet and should make a foot and ankle surgeon a part of their care team.

Charcot foot is estimated to affect less than one percent of people living with diabetes, but doctors say its prevalence appears to be growing as more Americans develop diabetes. Charcot foot is a sudden softening of the foot's bones caused by severe nerve damage, a common diabetic foot complication, and it can trigger an avalanche of problems, including joint loss, fractures, arch collapse, massive deformity, ulcers, amputation and even death. The symptoms of Charcot foot appear suddenly and include warm and red skin, swelling and pain. A person living with diabetes who has a red, hot, swollen foot or ankle requires emergency medical care. If you are living with diabetes, talk to you a foot and ankle surgeon about the signs and symptoms of Charcot foot, to help keep you on your feet.

Lawn care season is back and homeowners should use extra caution to protect their feet and the feet of those around them when using rotary-blade lawnmowers. Foot and ankle surgeons offer the following tips to help keep you safe and injury free:

- Don’t mow a wet lawn. Losing control from slipping on rain-soaked grass is the leading cause of foot injuries caused by power mowers.
- Wear heavy shoes or work boots when mowing—no sneakers or sandals.
- Don’t allow small children to ride on the lap of an adult on a lawn tractor. Children can be severely injured by the blades when getting on or off the machine.
- Mow across slopes, never go up or down.
- Never pull a running mower backward.
- Keep children away from the lawn when mowing.
- Keep the clip bag attached when operating a power mower to prevent projectile injuries.
- Use a mower with a release mechanism on the handle that automatically shuts it off when the hands let go.
