The recovery position is designed to prevent suffocation through obstruction of the airway. It is important to use the recovery position on anyone who is unconscious but breathing (unless you suspect they have a spinal injury). If you believe someone is overdosing on drugs or alcohol, be sure to put them in the recovery position and stay with them until professional help arrives.
