Before Oklahoma statehood in 1907, Ada was part of the wild, wild west. Lawlessness was prominent in this part of our country. It was during this that a United States Marshall named Augusta "Gus" Bobbitt was assassinated. The people of Ada were tired of this type of lawlessness. After a time in court the four men who were taken into custody for that murder were taken back to the jail. During the night a large group of citizens rushed the jail and hung the men. That act started the end of the wild, wild west in this small town. Come to the Pontotoc County Historical and Genealogical Society Library located at 221 West 16th to read about this in early newspaper articles, see the picture as well as the court record book.
