Su***de is always shocking, because it oftentimes accompanies a smiling face. I once heard, "We are all together walking each other home." We never know when it will be someone's time to go home, so we need to approach everyone with kindness and grace.

Check in with your loved ones and acquaintances... they may feel alone on their walk right now. Please do not hesitate to ask for help at the Su***de & Crisis Hotline:

Head to the link below for a great article on assistance with speaking to different age groups about su***de. Start the conversation early.

Happy 'More Good Today Day'! Every day is a good day to encourage kindness and generosity. But, sometimes we need an extra reminder, especially when we're all hustling and bustling for the holidays. Any actions of kindness and generosity - small or grand - has a positive impact on society and YOU.

Don't forget to pay it forward with your kindness this season... it doesn't have to cost a thing to have a huge ripple effect.

Today is Human Rights Day - a day we celebrate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

We celebrate so that we remain conscious of upholding this declaration as a daily commitment to supporting the treatment, health practices, programs, and laws that do not hinder human rights of any kind.

Happy International Volunteering Day! A day where we all have an opportunity to be agents of change and work as partners to build a better world.

I know many retirees feel as though volunteering is just something people tell you to do, because they don't know how else you should spend your time. The truth is that your life experience and work experience is incredibly valuable to organizations to help them transform societies, economies, and the environment.

Our world goes round because of the volunteers supporting it.

STUDENTS - Some helpful recommendations as you prepare for exams in the coming weeks...

Make a calendar with blocks of time set aside for making your study materials, scheduling Q&A sessions with your teachers and tutors, and actual study time.

Oftentimes we underestimate how much time it takes to do all of the prep work. If you schedule your blocks of time and are efficient and dedicated to that schedule, you will have time to SLEEP and EAT.

Proper time management and healthy sleeping and eating schedules will REDUCE stress, anxiety, and likelihood of becoming sick, and MAXIMIZE your potential to retain information, remain calm, and perform well.

While having a successful career may offer happiness through things like financial stability, praise from your peers, and feelings of accomplishment, we must remember to not wrap up our self worth in career success.

Our happiness needs to be well rounded and come from multiple facets of life like peace within ourselves, healthy relationships with family and friends, and extracurricular activities.

Oftentimes when we understand our self worth and find happiness in the right places, career success is more attainable - not the other way around.

As a mental health counselor, it is truly transformative to be in person for conferences and speeches. Sometimes we just don't know how grateful to be until something is taken away abruptly.

With that, I am grateful and excited about upcoming conferences for Texas Counseling Association about incorporating career into a private practice and for Ursuline Professional Women’s Network regarding career development and mental health.

If you are looking for a mental health and career counselor and to speak for your organization, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Last weekend we “fell back” in time and now the sun sets as early as 5pm… are you someone who suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)? This is the time when life can be more difficult for people suffering from SAD.

We sometimes joke about hibernating in the winter, holiday weight, and not wanting to leave the house, but the truth is that you could be suffering from SAD. Don't hesitate to reach out and discuss behavioral changes that seem to be associated with weather changes. You don't HAVE to suffer through it, you can embrace a treatment plan for it!

24 arguing

As a general rule, therapy involves healthy confrontations and conversations. However, sometimes it is important to know when to walk away and not respond. Silence can be the strongest form of confrontation without using any words at all.

Ever have that feeling that you should be laughing, but whatever was said, just hurts? You feel so blindsided or can't identify why it hurts, so you don't say anything at all?

Oftentimes, these jabs disguised as jokes come from people we care about the most or in the workplace, which is why it hurts so much.

We should all do a self awareness check from time to time and make sure the people we joke around with regularly in our lives are doing ok. And, offer words of affirmation in lieu of poking fun at people.

Take some time to rethink your approach to overcoming imposter syndrome.

And, encourage others to work through their imposter syndrome when you recognize it by first affirming them as human beings, acknowledging their inherent worth, and accepting them without condition. Second, affirm them as professionals, persistently calling out their achievements and celebrating them.

Have you said similar statements to yourself or other people? You may have imposter syndrome...

"Well, anyone can do what I do."

"I'm successful because of my support system and colleagues."

"That was good, but I can do better."

"I'm afraid I won't live up to their expectations"

"I don't want to risk disappointment, so I'll just go above and beyond."

We'll be breaking down imposter syndrome over the next couple weeks so that you know how to identify it and how to work on overcoming it.

Trauma-informed mental health care is a necessity. Many of us suffer through previous trauma in various forms and the need for therapy should never be underestimated in working through the healing process associated with trauma. Untreated, the symptoms of trauma can be devasting to relationships, the ability to hold a job, overall health and mental health.

This is especially true for patients suffering from trauma along with other mental illnesses. If you want to work towards a shift in mindset and cope with your trauma to truly become the person you want to be, don't be afraid to ask for assistance.
