Happy Friday! We hope that you have enjoyed all of our Back to School Tips this month!

Today we would like to end with our last tip in this series.....Reach Out To Your Teacher.

Your teacher is going to have a wealth knowledge that you can use to help your child such as: what the other kids are in to, what the other kids are talking about, what recess looks like, how lunch is going, how transitions are going and more.

Our suggestion is to give your teacher a few weeks to get to know your child -- then reach out via email and ask to meet/talk over the next few weeks. Within this discussion it is important to remember that our goal is to collaborate by sharing suggestions/tools that have helped, gaining information about their friends/potential friends, gaining information about their day, and more.

If you need help with how to approach your teacher or what to ask them please DM us.

Happy Thursday!

Today's Back to School - How to help your Child Make Friends -- is a simple one.......Know What They Like!

This means for you to know what the other kids in your kids class like:
💚What movies are they watching?
💜What TV shows are they watching?
💚What video games are they playing?
💜What sports are playing?
💚What toys do they play with?
💜and more!

The goal isn't for your child to necessarily like the same things -- bur rather for you to be able to give them the experiences within the same things so that they have things to connect and talk about with the kids in their class.

For example, if there is a movie that everyone is watching and talking about but your child hasn't then they may be left out of that conversation or play activity. However, if you can watch it with them, help them understand it, and help them talk about it -- then you have given your child a chance to participate within those conversations at school.

The more you know about what your kids classmates are into -- the more you can help them experience those same things while also still focusing on all the things that your child loves!

Play Dates!! Who doesn't love a good Play Date??

Today's Back to School - How to help your Kids Make Friends is to have "Play Dates"!

When planning a play date here are a few tips:

1) Start with just 1 friend per play date.

2) If your play date is an outing start with something that you child loves and is very successful at. If they love going to a specific park; bowling; laser tag; the zoo; etc Try to stay away from new things or things your child doesn't like.

3) If your play date is at home try to plan it ahead of time focusing on the things your child likes to do and what the friend likes to do. Even better create a plan/schedule for the kids -- the more structure you can add and help while playing the more successful it will be!

4) For all play dates try to break up the play by adding in a little snack time. This will help everyone!

5) If this sounds a little overwhelming for you that is okay -- You may need a play date helpers -- a Play date helper is an adult who joins the play date to help facilitate play, conversation, and more!

This week we are talking about 5 Simple Ways to Help Your Child Make Friends at school.

Yesterday we shared Practicing on the Playground.

Today I want to talk about how to "Take Advantage of Lunch Time".

If your child brings their lunch then packing something for them in their Lunch to talk about is great idea such as:

1) joke
2) question of the day
3) conversation question starter (like: What's your favorite ______?; Do you like _____?; What did you do overt the weekend?)
4) conversation topic
5) much more

The key to for your child to use these successfully is to 1) practice at home; 2) make it fun -- some kids like to be "surprised" while others like to create their own; 3) change it up do something different each day; and more.

A lot of the times once our friends start the conversation -- it allows for other kids to do the same and it helps them be part of the conversation.

Happy Monday! We hope that you are enjoying our Back to School Tips this month!

So far we have discussed Tips for Transitioning back to School, Tips for Homework, and Tips for Talking about their School Day.

This week we want to focus on How to Help Your Kids be social at school. There are many ways you can help your child be social at school without even being with them at school.

Today's tip is Practice on the Playground!

After a few weeks of school reach out to your child's teacher and ask them how Recess is going? What do they see your child do during recess time? What are the other kids doing during recess time?

Once you know you can go to their playground after school, before school, during the weekend, during school breaks and practice.

Practice playing on the equipment, practice playing the sport games your kids classmates are playing, practice playing the social games, and more.
The more you practice with your child -- the more they will participate within the same activities at recess time.

If you try this tip and need help -- reach out -- we are here to help!

We hope that you are enjoying our Back to School Tips this month! Come back next week for a few more.....

This week our goal is to help you with the dreaded question "What did you do today?"

Today's tip is to create and use a Remember Page.

Just like the Dry Erase Board -- many of kids need a visual to help them talk about their day.

We have made a ton of different Remember pages for our kids.....some focus just on their favorite parts of the day; some have tons of visuals on them; some have scripts for them to use; and more. All of the pages we have made have been different because our kids are different.

The goal is to create a page that visually represents part of their day/entire day as well as has language that they can use to talk about their day.

If you are a KidSpeak client talk to your therapist about making a remember page for your child.

If you are not a KidSpeak client and need help making and/or using a remember page -- DM us -- we are here to help. We have helped families - teachers - speech therapists - and more create remember pages for their kids/students in the past.

Happy Thursday! Today's Back to School - Let's Talk about our Day Tip is Talk about Your Day.

Some of our friends will completely shut down when you ask "What did you do today?"

If this is your child -- then the best thing you can do is talk about your day.

Talk about your day in the same way you want them to talk about their day. Such as:

1) If they are working out listing out what they did for the day -- then you list out the things you did.

2) If they are working on talking about friends -- then you talk about your day in relation to your friends/family. Like who you had lunch with - did you talk on the phone with anyone today - etc.

3) If they are working on talking about their favorites -- then you talk about the favorite things you did that day.

4) If they are working on talking about their feelings -- then you talk about your day and your feelings.

5) and more.

Really you can't do wrong here -- just talk about your day!

Today's Back to School Let's Talk About Our Day Tip is....... Create a Remember Song!

We LOVE music at our office... as in our experience music can often be magical.
If your child loves music then this may be the tip for you.

We suggest picking out a song that you and/or your child loves that has a fun tune. Then start by changing up the words to focus on your child's school day.

Once you do this start your week by singing and filling in about their day that you know. The more you do this pause and let your child fill in the black about their day.
Can you guess the real name of the start of this remember song........"Stop! In the name of school. What did you do today. Think about it!"

This week we are sharing "Let's Talk About our Day" Tips.

For some kids no matter how hard you try -- talking about their day in the car is just too hard and that is okay. In addition, some kids just have days /weeks when it is hard -- again that is okay.

For these kids or for these days/weeks we suggest to just emotionally regulate by using your Car Quiet Bag.

This bag should be packed with activities that.....
1) your child likes
2) your child can do on their own
3) is quiet
4) is calming
5) is car approved

The only goal is to help regulate your child. Then later in the afternoon/evening you can try the other tips!

If you need help creating your own Quiet Bag and/or you try this tip and need help -- reach out -- we are here to help!

Happy Monday! We hope that you are enjoying our Back to School Tips this month!

So far we have discussed Tips for Transitioning back to School (new or old) and Tips for Homework. This week we want to focus on How to Help Your Kids Talk About their School Day.

Most of our kids really dislike the question "What did you do today?" However most of our families are super excited to hear about our kids days -- so this week take a look at these tips.

Our first tip is to Keep a Dry Erase Board and Marker in the car for your child.
Some kids do best when they can visually see what they did that day....so we work on drawing it out such as:

1) draw something you did at recess
2) draw something you ate at snack/lunch
3) draw how you are feeling
4) draw something you read today
5) and more

Remember some friends do best when you start silly -- so think of what they love and add it in -- let's say they love dinosaurs you could start with -- draw a dinosaur sliding down the slide - draw a dinosaur in PE class -- and more.
If your kids like this -- then the more you practice the more they will start talking about their day.

One thing that can be fun is as soon as they get in the car already have a picture of something you did that day -- and have them look and guess something you did.

📚 What’s Ms. Manda Reading This Weekend? 📚

Happy Sunday! This weekend, Ms. Manda is re-reading a longtime favorite: Students with Asperger Syndrome: A Guide for College Personnel. 💜

We discovered this book about 7 years ago through a recommendation from , and it quickly became one of our go-to resources for families preparing for the transition to college (another favorite from this series coming soon!).

What makes this book so special? It walks families through all the essential areas to consider—from how college support services differ from high school, to the many life skills involved in living away from home. It's realistic, thoughtful, and incredibly helpful.

We often recommend that parents start reading this book as early as Middle School. We know that sounds early—but it gives families a clear vision of what lies ahead and how to support their child in building the skills they’ll need.

💚 This book is a must-read for parents, teachers, and therapists supporting students with Autism, language challenges, ADHD, learning differences, and more.

If you have a middle or high schooler and you're starting to think about the future—this one’s for you!
