December is Safe Toys & Celebrations Month!
Before the holiday excitement kicks into high gear, Premier Vision of Dallas is here with an important reminder: some of the season’s favorite gifts and celebrations can put eyes at risk—especially when toys launch projectiles or champagne corks go flying!
The American Academy of Ophthalmology has officially designated December as Safe Toys & Celebrations Month, encouraging families to keep eye safety top of mind during gifts, gatherings, and year-end festivities.
Here are a few smart tips to help protect your family’s vision this season:
Choose toys wisely.
Skip toys with sharp edges or projectile features like BB guns, dart sets, slingshots, and bow-and-arrow toys. These can cause corneal scratches, bleeding inside the eye, and even serious eye trauma if used improperly.
Be mindful with laser toys.
Look for lasers within IEC Class 1 limits—the safest option for children’s products.
Add protective eyewear.
If a toy involves speed or impact, include safety goggles or impact-resistant eyewear as part of the gift. It’s a simple upgrade that can prevent lifelong injury.
Try safer, active alternatives.
Snow gear, skates, bikes, trampolines with nets, or binoculars encourage outdoor play with far lower risk for eye injuries.
Go screen-free.
Consider gifts that limit excessive screen use to help reduce digital eye strain.
A little precaution goes a long way toward keeping your holidays bright, healthy, and injury-free. From all of us at Premier Vision of Dallas, we wish you a safe and joyful December!
