Warts + Children: Causes, Treatments, and Prevention

Warts are a common skin concern in children, often appearing on the hands, fingers, feet, or knees. They’re caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which thrives in warm, moist environments like locker rooms, swimming pools, and playgrounds. Kids are especially prone to warts because their immune systems are still developing, making it easier for the virus to take hold after minor cuts or scrapes.

The good news? Warts are benign, but they can be bothersome, spread to other areas, or cause discomfort.

Treatment options include:
1. At-home care: Over-the-counter salicylic acid solutions can gradually soften and shed wart tissue with consistent use.
2. In-office treatments: Dermatologists may use cryotherapy (freezing), topical medications, or specialized procedures to safely and effectively remove stubborn warts — with less risk of scarring.

Prevention tips: Encourage children not to pick or scratch warts, wear flip-flops in communal areas, and wash hands regularly. Covering warts with a bandage can also reduce spreading.
