The aim of CrossFit is to forge a broad, general and inclusive fitness. We have sought to build a program that will best prepare trainees for any physical contingency — not only for the unknown, but for the unknowable. After looking at all sport and physical tasks collectively, we asked what physical skills and adaptations would most universally lend themselves to performance advantage. Capacity culled from the intersection of all sports demands would quite logically lend itself well to all sport. In sum, our specialty is not specializing. CrossFit is many things. Primarily, it’s a fitness regimen developed by Coach Greg Glassman over several decades. He was the first person in history to define fitness in a meaningful, measurable way (increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains). CrossFit itself is defined as that which optimizes fitness (constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity). CrossFit is also the community that spontaneously arises when people do these workouts together. In fact, the communal aspect of CrossFit is a key component of why it’s so effective. Today, CrossFit, the company, provides accredited training seminars throughout the world. We publish several websites providing extensive free content, including workouts, training and support for becoming fit, as well as a growing Journal of extended instruction. We have a worldwide network of more than 5,500 affiliated gyms and more than 35,000 accredited CrossFit Level 1 trainers. And, we have created the Sport of Fitness, known as the CrossFit Games, where we crown the Fittest Man and Woman on Earth. In 2003, we started a “new” blog that would spur a revolution in the fitness industry. The contents were simple: the date, a picture, the Workout of the Day (WOD), and usually some provocative nugget of information. Check out our first full month of posts back in May 2003. Anyone with an Internet connection and the willingness, curiosity and bravery to try it, could. From this simple blog and a single gym in Santa Cruz, Calif., there sprung an immense community of fitness enthusiasts who have learned the movements, tested the theory and accumulated a huge amount of data supporting Glassman’s equation:

Member testimony from Alison: Joining Blackhorse 12 years ago has transformed my life in so many ways! When my time as a college basketball player came to an end, I lost the joy I felt of belonging to a team and the passion of competing. Through CrossFit, I have found the love of pushing myself beyond ways I never imagined. I am so much stronger and confident in my abilities (except in box jumps 😆) than I ever have been. I cherish the friendships I have made along the way and appreciate the support from each and every one of them. I truly can’t imagine my life without Crossfit.

Why Coach Morgan does what she does:

In 2014, I randomly walked into a CrossFit gym just to try it out and twelve years later, I’m still in love with the sport. These workouts give me a place to release stress, find mental clarity, and stay active in a way that never feels like a chore. I genuinely enjoy showing up.

The members here have shared incredible highs and some very low lows, and through it all, we come together to support one another no matter what. As new members join, we love getting to know them, celebrating them, and lifting them up.

Hey I’m Ashley, and you’ll likely see my dog Winnie and I at the 6:30 pm class. I started coming to BlackHorse a little over two years ago. I switched to BlackHorse from another commercial gym in the area. Although I was nervous to try a different gym and workout style, I was hooked by the end of the first week! I’ve pretty much been at the gym 5x a week since then, and it’s rare that I skip a workout. I love that workouts at BlackHorse are programmed for you and there is a different workout each day of the week. Most days, walking into the gym after a long work day is the hardest part of the workout, but once I’m there and surrounded by the other members who have become great friends I’m always ready to work hard and get a good workout in. My time at the gym is often my favorite part of the day, and I always look forward to working on new skills or attempting to PR a lift. Come check it out!

Hi, my name is Casey. I have been a coach at Blackhorse for about 4 years as well as a competitive athlete in the crossFit space. I like training just as much as I like coaching some of my biggest wins are when my athletes hit PR’s or simply are able to do movements that they were not able to do before.

The gym is not only my second home due to being a competitive athlete and spending hours here every day. But it’s also where I found my second family, it’s not just the other athletes in the gym, but it’s the people who have your back, who are there when you need someone to talk to and are there when you need someone to push you! WE ARE NOT JUST A GYM. WE ARE A COMMUNITY!

I look forward to the 2026 seasons! It will be the season of pushing ourselves, improving ourselves, and being the absolute best we can!
