Yesterday, we performed seven ultrasound guided peripheral nerve blocks. Five of these nerve blocks were Popliteal Sciatic with a saphenous nerve block, one was an interscalene nerve block and a supraclavicular nerve block.

We are humbled and honored to have the opportunity to provide this service to our patients in an effort to streamline their postoperative recovery by eliminating or reducing their pain.

Undergoing a shoulder procedure or know someone who has? Let’s discuss it below!

The first image illustrates a block performed by one of our CRNAs. You can easily visualize the Interscalene groove which features the nerves C5, C6, C7 and inferiorly you will note the nerves C8 and T1.

Lateral to the cervical nerves within the Interscalene groove is our ultrasound needle. We utilize a nerve stimulator to objectively identify correct placement of our ultrasound needle for patient safety and confirmation of proper placement of our ultrasound needle prior to injection of Local Anesthetic.

The second image details the anatomy of the brachial plexus which hosts the Interscalene nerve roots of C4-T1. We as clinicians review this anatomy weekly as we prepare for our upper extremity blocks throughout the week.

The last image demonstrates the coverage an interscalene nerve block provides. The interscalene nerve block is both a motor and sensory nerve block. This means after the administration of local anesthetic your arm should feel heavy, numb and it should lack painful stimulation from surgical incision.

What does all this mean? Better patient outcomes, limited to no narcotic pain medication consumed post operatively and a more streamline recovery process for our patients to return back to their activities of daily living.

It’s just that simple with Salem Anesthesia.
