I had the honor of presenting at the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP) annual meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, alongside my esteemed colleagues, Dr. Brandon Yarns and Dr. Anna Zhu, on the topic of Somatic Symptom Disorder in Older Adults. Our session delved into the complexities of diagnosis and assessment, highlighting the transformative role of Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) in treating psychosomatic symptoms. I shared a compelling case in which ISTDP was successfully used to manage medically unexplained somatic symptoms, underscoring its powerful impact in clinical practice.

I like the metaphor of “The Emotional Umbilical Cord”. Recently, a loved one sent me this video. It’s called The Cord. It explains the concept of impaired separation/individuation during childhood development. The authority figure in the video can be anyone, including the mother, father, or even grandparents involved in the child’s raising. The content signifies a connection where one person relies strongly on the other for validation and emotional support. When the individuation separation process is impaired, emotions such as resentment, anger, or pain are involved, impacting the relationship quality between the two individuals and their relationship with others. Dealing with such cords can be challenging, requiring open communication, boundary settings, and often professional help to untangle and resolve the underlying issues. Culture plays an important role in how parents handle separation/individuation. Keeping the balance between cultural values and mental health principles can be extremely difficult, and teaching our children the message is even harder. Cut the “Emotional Umbilical Cord” with empathy, support, kindness, and LOVE.
