My intent this month was to share with those new to autism what our journey has been like. But life “lifed” and I didn’t get the opportunity to fully share.
So on this last day of autism awareness/acceptance month, I would like to share some important “journey tips”:
đź’™ Develop your village early. Determine what biological, psychological, social, and spiritual needs your child/family need. Look in your environment, find the best options, and integrate them into your lives.
💙 Don’t be afraid to ask for help. We were not meant to live in isolation. There are many families out there facing similar issues. There are also a plethora of resources available to help your village thrive.
💙 Village members need to be committed, consistent and understand your vision/mission. If they cannot/will not/do not…. Whatever the not is, they have to go. Continuity of care across all environments/village members is ESSENTIAL for success. Do not be afraid to add and subtract as needed.
đź’™ Learn how to rest, trust your village and take breaks sometimes. This journey is hard. Rest/respite is CRUCIAL to whole wellness and a healthy village.
💙You will make mistakes as a parent and that’s ok. Learn the lesson and keep moving, because trust me, another issue is coming. Rumination never solved anything.
We have used these strategies extensively to help Aaron have his definition of a meaningful day. Yes, there have been ups and downs, but Aaron is a happy, productive adult, and that is all that matters.
đź’™
I could go on forever, but I will stop here. To those new to autism, please do not isolate yourself or your babies. Reach out, Learn all you can, and build your village.
And yes, I can help you build your village: www.prudencounselingconcepts.com
