Psoriasis is a condition that causes the body to make new skin cells in days rather than weeks. As these cells pile up on the surface of the skin, you may see thick, scaly patches. They may appear on the skin as a single patch or join together to cover a large area of skin. Plaques tend to be itchy. Without treatment, the itch can become intense. Some people notice that their skin stings, burns, or feels painful and tight.

How do you treat it? Psoriasis is a chronic condition, which means you may treat it for life. Treatments range from medications to topical lotions to light therapies and may change as your body changes. A long-term relationship with your dermatology provider will allow you to stay on top of what works best for you.

August is National Psoriasis Awareness Month, making it a good time to have an annual skin checkup and learn about signs and symptoms of this persistent inflammatory skin disease.

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes raised, red scaly patches to appear on the skin. There are no special blood tests or tools to diagnose psoriasis, and treatment usually involves a combination of strategies depending on the type and severity of your psoriasis.

Learning more about your type of psoriasis and its triggers will help you and your doctor determine the best treatment for you. Early diagnosis is important! If you develop a rash that doesn't go away with an over-the-counter medication, consider contacting your doctor.

When it comes to skin cancer, a major risk factor is prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The good news is that you can greatly reduce the danger posed by UV radiation. You can enjoy outdoor activities and limit your skin cancer risk by taking simple, smart protective measures. Protect yourself by:

- Wearing sun-protective clothing and accessories such as a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
- Using a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 and reapplying.
- Seeking shade during the peak times for sunlight. Also, avoid indoor tanning.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in America, one that requires expert treatment. Mohs surgery has allowed dermatologists to offer patients a treatment option with a higher cure rate, more precise excisions, and cost-effective strategy.

Mohs surgery is considered the “Gold Standard” because it offers the highest potential cure rate (99 percent for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma), and it offers superior cosmetic results by leaving healthy tissue intact.
