October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and it is important for us to deepen our understanding of this critical issue. Domestic violence is characterized by a pattern of abusive behaviors exhibited by an individual within an intimate relationship, often referred to as intimate partners. In South Carolina, the legal definition of intimate partners includes those who are married, cohabiting, or share a child.

Domestic violence extends beyond physical harm. It also encompasses other forms of abuse, including mental, emotional, and financial abuse, among others.
