It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our colleague, Chris Ramirez. He began his employment at Northland as one of the first faces you would see (or talk to) when you entered the doors at the Main Office in Grand Rapids as one of our support staff/front desk.

He pursued training to become a Certified Peer Support Specialist (PSS) and after completion of his training he joined the team at Kiesler Wellness Center as PSS.

Chris was kind; compassionate; had a desire to help others; had a wonderful sense of humor; shared his humor through memes; he was artistic/crafty; and an amazing cook. He introduced many of his co-workers to his authentic meals (with a little less spice than he preferred 😊) and shared his craft of leather work and other crafts for a few staff events! He will be missed. 💛

Chris’s impact on our clients, co-workers and community will not be forgotten.

A Celebration of Life will be held on:
📅 Tuesday, August 26, 2025
📍 Kiesler Wellness Center
⏰ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
🥙 A light lunch will be provider
⭐️Come to share stories & memories in honor of Chris.

We invite all who knew Chris to join us in honoring their memory.
Please RSVP: 218-326-5114

🌟 Employee Appreciation Post 🌟

Today, we just want to pause and say THANK YOU to our incredible teams!

We were able to host our 4th Annual Employee Appreciation Picnic - with an 80’s theme! We had Jimmy John’s and delicious treats for lunch. We hosted our annual Bags Tournament, teams where able to play a very modified version of Squid Games Challenges and there were additional prize give aways.

We were also able to fill 3 totes for annual ‘Stuff the Bus’ school supplies drive!

Staff’s dedication, creativity, and compassion shine through every single day. Whether it’s going the extra mile for clients or if staff are supporting each other,—to all our staff, you make a difference!

We are grateful for the hard work you put into everything you do. You are the reason we can keep growing, serving, and making an impact in our community.

Here’s to YOU, thank you!

Our International Falls office will be hosting their picnic on Thursday and their office will be closed for that time. Please check their posts for hours!

Northland offers an incredible program called Certified Peer Support Services. If you have ever met with a provider and thought, ‘They don’t get it’ or ‘How would they know I felt, they have never dealt with this before.’ Well, this is the perfect program to have in conjunction with your other services (or the only service). Peer support providers have undergone extensive training and have also have LIVED experience with mental health! Northland’s Peer Support program is offered out of Kiesler Wellness Center. Kaija H, Certified Peer Support says this about becoming a Peer Support Services along with why/how peer support services are so impactful:

Why did I become a peer support specialist?
🌼Because I know what it feels like to walk through darkness and wonder if you’ll ever find your way out. I became a peer support specialist to be the person I needed when I was struggling—someone real, someone safe, someone who understands. I’m here to walk alongside others, not in front of them. My lived experience allows me to offer support with compassion, connection, and zero judgment.

What do I love about being a peer support?
🌼That I don’t have to pretend.
🌼That I can walk in with my scars visible and say, “You don’t have to be fixed to be worthy.”
🌼That I get to witness people slowly start to believe they’re not too much, not too broken, not too late.
🌼That I don’t save people—I remind them they can save themselves.

Why is peer support different than other services?
🌼Because I get it.
🌼Because I don’t talk down—I sit beside.
🌼Because I don’t throw out buzzwords—I speak from lived experience.
🌼Because I don’t ask people to trust me blindly—I earn it through truth, presence, and showing up like their life matters. Because it does.

Why is KWC a great place for support?
🌼Because we hold space for the messy, the beautiful, the in-progress.
🌼Because here, you’re not a diagnosis or a case number—you’re a human being.
🌼Because healing happens here—not through perfection, but through connection.

Janet A. Miller, Certified Peer Support & Certified Family Peer Support shares more about why she chose to become a PSS and what she believes can be helpful to others!

Why did you become a peer support?
❇️To give back what was given to me: peace, self-confidence, empathy and compassion.

Why is KWC a great place to go for support?
❇️Using the services at KWC/NCC changed my outlook. It really helped me to grow and change in ways that helped me succeed in ways I could have never dreamed of.

What do you enjoy about being a peer support?
❇️Being able to meet with people on an equal level and watch people power through change and growth.

Why is peer support different than other services?
❇️Peer supports can really relate and empathize with people. Peer supports are able to meet each person where they are at. We have been there too and we know that sometimes when darkness falls, you can still look up and admire the stars. 💫
