It’s been six months since I last shared here—not for lack of desire, but because my practice has been full, and for that, I’m deeply grateful. My work is grounded in care for neurodivergent folks, BIPOC communities, and those within the LGBTQIA+ spectrum. You are not an afterthought—you are seen, heard, and deeply valued. While the world continues to shift, one truth remains constant: your power. 2025 has brought its weight, but also countless moments that call us to gratitude. May we continue to center what’s good, not as avoidance, but as resistance. Let that goodness be intentional, rooted in justice, and a reflection of our individuality and shared humanity.

The holiday season can intensify feelings of grief, as traditions and celebrations may highlight the absence of a loved one.

Grief may present as sadness, anxiety, irritability, or a desire to withdraw from holiday activities.

Acknowledge and honor emotions as a natural part of the grieving process.

Incorporate memories of the loved one into holiday traditions, such as lighting a candle, sharing stories, or acts of kindness in their honor.

Consider setting boundaries, scaling back on commitments, or creating new traditions to reduce pressure.

Prioritize self-compassion and flexibility to address emotional needs during this time. ❤️❤️

Family Gatherings and Mental Health During the Holidays

The holiday season often brings family gatherings filled with tradition and joy but can also come with stress, anxiety, or sadness. Social expectations, family dynamics, and memories of loss can be overwhelming. It’s important to prioritize your mental health while navigating these emotionally charged times.

Coping Skills for Holiday Anxiety and Depression
1. Set Boundaries: Decide in advance how much time you’ll spend at events. It’s okay to say no to gatherings that feel too overwhelming.
2. Practice Deep Breathing: Use the 4-7-8 technique: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, and exhale for 8 to calm your mind.
3. Stick to Your Routine: Maintain healthy habits like regular meals, sleep, and exercise.
4. Identify an Exit Plan: If the gathering becomes too much, have a way to politely excuse yourself or step outside for a breather.
5. Focus on Gratitude: Reflect on things you’re thankful for to shift your mindset.
6. Seek Support: Reach out to trusted friends, a therapist, or support groups if you’re feeling low.
7. Limit Alcohol: Excessive drinking can worsen anxiety or depression.
8. Engage in Self-Care: Schedule quiet time for yourself to recharge, such as reading, walking, or meditating.

Remember, the holidays are a season, not a deadline to meet everyone’s expectations. Taking care of your mental health allows you to enjoy the moments that matter most.
