Client Profile – Makenzie
Kenzie—short for Makenzie, though “everyone calls me Kenzie”— has been a client of Miller’s since she was very young. Now 12 years old and currently in the 7th grade, she is full of life and excitement. Kenzie experienced a brain injury when she was just five months old, which resulted in cerebral palsy. While her condition makes it difficult for her body to do what she wants, she’s quick to let you know that she’s smart, fun, determined, and full of personality.
Kenzie uses a wheelchair for mobility and receives daily help from her mom, who she shares a close bond with. Her favorite color is green, she adores sunflowers and baby cows. She loves playing Roblox, listening to music, reading books, and dreaming big. One day, she hopes to open her very own daycare to support kids and families—a reflection of her big heart and love of helping others.
Kenzie says, “Some of my favorite things are listening to music and singing. I really love Pentatonix, Caleb & Kelsey, and Taylor Swift. But my favorite song is Edelweiss from The Sound of Music.” When she’s not listening to music or gaming, she’s reading—often through Audible. Her favorite books? The Year of the Buttered Cat, the Out of My Mind series, and The Chance to Fly—all of which feature characters who use wheelchairs. “It makes it easy to relate to them,” she says. “And the stories make me laugh.”
Kenzie’s relationship with Miller’s goes back many years, but it’s her newest power wheelchair that has made the biggest difference in her everyday life. It’s a sit-to-stand model—something she’s especially excited about.
“I wanted to stand up in church when everyone was singing—and now I can. I wanted to be able to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance with my classmates—and now I can. In choir, I used to have to sit during concerts, but now I get to stand up and I’m really excited!”
After a major hip surgery a few years ago, standing became even more important for her body’s strength and recovery. Her mom and therapists struggled to find a standing device that worked well for her and made transferring easy. “Now they don’t even have to transfer me into a different device. I can just use my chair!” she says proudly.
Kenzie was quick to thank the Miller’s team for making it happen: “I’m really thankful for Bobby, Rod, and Jessica, and my awesome physical therapist Miss Angela for helping me get my new chair. We’ve been really grateful to them and all the hard work,” she says, and adds that she and her family are always telling others how much they love Miller’s. Kenzie’s heart and unshakable determination remind us all what it means to live with joy and purpose, and we’re grateful to have her as a client.
