⚠️BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTION⚠️

🩸What is it?
- BFR is using an inflatable tourniquet (similar to a blood pressure cuff) to PARTIALLY occlude blood flow into an extremity while performing exercise.

🩸Why?
- Gaining strength and limiting muscle atrophy while rehabbing an injury is vital. However, that is often times difficult due to pain limiting the ability to appropriately load a joint. BFR allows you to reach a similar level of muscle fatigue which causes similar levels of muscle growth with less load, less pain, and more progress.

🩸Is it safe?
- We get it, occluding blood flow sounds scary. The good news is, BFR has been extensively researched and is safe for nearly all patients. There are also lots of ways to modify BFR to make it even safer for those who might have comorbidities like diabetes, high blood pressure, vascular issues, cardiac history, and more. Our therapists are especially trained to apply BFR at the highest level of safety.

What can how fast you walk tell us about your health❓

Turns out A LOT. The faster you are able to walk, the less likely you are to be hospitalized, need assistance, or experience ANY adverse event.

And it’s easy to test. Just measure out 10 feet. Give yourself a head steer to build up speed. And START THE TIMER!

Our next test for healthy aging is the 30 second sit to stand. Leg power and strength are integral as we age and tell us a lot about how safe someone is for all their daily tasks.

The test is simple. Find a chair, set a timer for 30 seconds, and stand as many times as you can. Here’s our student, Will, demonstrating the test. (We think he could gone a little faster)

👊Fun office competition but also useful knowledge!

💪Grip strength has become more and more researched and we are getting wild information from it. Higher grip strength is associated with fewer falls, less risk of fractures from falls, lower morbidity, and lower mortality risks.

🤜That’s code for less sick and living longer!

✅ The goal for females is >35 lbs and for males >57 lbs.
