My aura is a mullet haircut. Healthy lifestyle choices outside, a Panhandle dive bar inside. A perfect "flow state" would be like putting on roller-skates and a blindfold and just rolling through the front door of that dive bar and right out onto the back deck to enjoy the peaceful sounds of the Gulf of Mexico, crickets, and the murmur of the hipster-music-snob playlist in the bar through the walls, but it's not that easy… Ever.
The Dive Bar in my head is always packed. Full of old friends, smoke, memories, and it's shoulder to shoulder with people that if I put on my skates and bust through the front door, I would immediately be stopped by a distant acquaintance who would just say, "You're too old to be wearing roller-skates."
If flow-state is smoothly rolling through that bar, no interruptions to the peaceful place outside. Life, however, is what packs that place out, even on a Tuesday. So I have a choice now, and it starts with, "How do I clear that room?"
There are destructive ways to clear the room, like setting off a fire extinguisher at a party. Did you know that those are often full of some crazy powder? Yeah, neither did I, but I now know the difference between clearing out and an evacuation. Wisdom is everywhere.
Is the room in your head a temple, your home, or somewhere else? Who's in there? Your parents, friends, your old self, or is it the person you love with all your heart?
Each decision and thought you have is another group of people. While I write this email, the room in my head is full of so many people, it makes a flow state almost impossible until I clear it. Like trying to have a quiet moment or a deep conversation in a place full of interruptions. Your head is often the worst wingman when it comes to falling in love with yourself. Don't be your own third wheel.
