Let's talk about contractions!

I've been having Braxton Hicks off and on since about 20 weeks. As a birth worker and someone who has given birth twice before, I am aware of the differences between Braxton Hicks and true contractions, but these differences may not always be easy to tell in first-time pregnancies.

If you are unsure of whether you're experiencing Braxton Hicks or true contractions (especially before 37 weeks), reach out to your doula or midwife/OB team.

Hey, y'all! I'm still here 😅 I've had all the ideas for content to share with you all, but with both boys in school full time, I've been enjoying naps and doing absolutely nothing during my days 😌

Peanut is growing and doing great and loves doing acrobatics all day. In the last few weeks, I've been focusing on moving my body and resting when I need to. I still use my exercise ball, and I'm doing more walks with my dog and light strength training. I finalized my birth wishes with the intended parents, and I toured the hospital where I'll be giving birth. I'll be sharing more soon about what I'm doing to mentally prepare for this birth 💛

Sometimes, saying no to a provider may feel uncomfortable. While "no" is always a complete sentence, here are a few other ways to say no that may make you feel more comfortable. This sentiment goes beyond pregnancy and can be used in any medical setting. Credit to for the infographic 💜

Let's get this body ready for labor and birth!

I didn't do any physical activity during my first trimester due to being so sick. Once I started feeling better around 15 weeks, I started incorporating walking, bike rides with the boys, and yoga and pilates. Now that I'm around six months, I want to shift my focus on preparing my body for birth. I don't do these movements every day, but I aim for a few days a week.

Always check with your midwife or OB before incorporating any new physical activity, and always listen to your body!

This is a long one, but it's worth the watch!

Sometimes, OB appointments can be more frustrating than anything else, especially when the provider tells you everything looks great (a direct quote of "baby looks perfect"), then proceeds to say I'll need to return to have the baby's heart checked just in case.

Don't be afraid to ask the questions. The Dr said there was an increase in the risk for heart malformation in babies conceived via IVF, so I asked what the specific numbers were, and it was a .2% increase in risk. He was visibly frustrated that I was asking questions (a red flag for any provider), but I didn't let that deter me. It can feel intimidating to question a Dr about something, but if you have the question, ask it! Practice asking questions before you go to an appointment so you feel more comfortable with it when you get there. And you can always to help educate you and help you feel more empowered in any situation!

Hey, y'all 👋🏾 just checking in, cuz it's been a while, and I'm feeling cute today ✨️

I'm officially in the second trimester, and I've been feeling better the last few weeks. Some days, I struggle to get enough food (baby is picky), but I'm just grateful that everything is staying down for the most part. Baby is definitely popping out now, and I look more pregnant than bloated 😅 peanut is healthy, and I'm feeling good, so that's what's important! I've been focusing on moving my body more. I love following for tips on staying active during pregnancy, and I balance that with taking a nap when I feel I need it. Listening to your body is key, whether you're pregnant or not!

It has been a struggle figuring out what to eat and when to eat it with hyperemesis. Luckily, Peanut told me to have some yogurt, fruit, and granola, and I'm glad I listened! This snack packs 20g of protein (very important during pregnancy) and kept me feeling full. I didn't have any nausea at all, and it stayed down, so it's a win for me and baby!

This , I can't help but have gratitude for safely birthing both my boys. I didn't know back then how dangerous it is just to give birth as a black woman in America; I do not take my health and experiences for granted. As I prepare to give birth again this year, I am armed with more knowledge and tools to advocate for myself, still knowing and understanding that being educated alone won't be my pass. Black Maternal Health Week serves as a reminder of how far we've come and how far we still have to go!
