Continuing our Yoga Sutra Mondays, with sutra 1:3
"Tadah drastuh svarupe avastanam"

When the waves of the mind become still, awareness becomes aware of itself. Most of the time we are absorbed in everything around us. Like a mirror, we reflect the world, completely unaware that we are not the reflection. But when we clean the dust of life from our mirrors, we reflect only ourselves.

There are many ways to stillness. A yoga practice is a great way to still the anxiety and depressions in the mind, if only for a moment. Sometimes, a respite is all it takes to see a ray of sunshine.

Meet Your Teacher: Ryan Barrett
Class: Hatha/Vinyasa Flow
Day: Thursday at 5:30pm

My philosophy when it comes to my yoga practice I believe that the point of yoga is to bring the body and mind into a state of balance and clarity. Through our postures, we move energy through the body, opening up the channels for energy to flow, and in doing so we create an environment within ourselves where higher levels of consciousness can be achieved.

My classes are designed around the defining translation of the word yoga, meaning to bind. Our goal is to bring mind, body, and spirit into a union that works together rather than work against each other. To start each class I like to bring everyone into their breath so that we can move out of the mind and into the space of silence in between thoughts where we can observe our minds and the patterns that arise. Our practice progresses into postures and moving stagnant energy through the body which may be holding us back. As we slow down, our mind and body begin to settle into a state of silence and stillness where we experience ourselves from a more clear and calm state of consciousness.

So long as you have adequate mobility this class is designed to be accessible to all levels of practitioners with the focus being on achieving a higher state of consciousness as opposed to being solely driven by the exercise part of the practice. I love to share my practice and experience that I’ve cultivated over a decade of studying with anyone wanting to deepen their own practice.
