Necrotizing fasciitis in horses can be fatal. The condition can begin as a small puncture and progress to widespread systemic infection. Wounds in general and puncture wounds in particular are serious. The winter haircoat can make it difficult to find wounds. ERU. Equine recurrent uveitis is a debilitating condition for both horses and their owners. It is an immune mediated condition affecting the uveal tract (iris, ciliary body, and choroid). It can lead to blindness and other complications such as glaucoma and cataracts. Because of the degree of pain, many horses will self traumatize and cause corneal ulceration. Collagen cross linking can greatly improve corneal healing. Once ulcers are completely healed, then the ERU must be managed with medication to suppress the immune response. However, if a horse continues to be painful as well as blind, the Equine care team must make a decision about the quality of life and potential for enucleation. Many horses adapt very well to being blind with the proper support and safety precautions put in place. Call the Equine team at 541 924 1700 for help with ERU.
