Rolling Brownouts and Heatwaves: The Art of Teaching Flexibility

Sometimes, I really enjoy the off-script excitement of teaching—the improvisation that comes from encountering things not necessarily planned at the beginning of the class but unfolding as the session progresses. This weekend, I was teaching in the hills of Sierra Madre, CA, during an intense heat wave. Temperatures soared to 108°F (42°C for the rest of the world). It was hot, humid, and there were 18 of us packed into a darkened room with a rickety air conditioner struggling in the corner. Despite its efforts, the heat was overwhelming, which meant we had to modify everything: breaking down activities, pacing ourselves, reminding everyone to stay hydrated, and encouraging slow, mindful movements.

But that wasn’t all. We experienced rolling brownouts, and the power went out more than once. Lunch came earlier than planned. Breath work became more relaxed than usual, and we adapted inner and outer circle exercises into a musical chair format. At one point, I reached out to some mentors for grounding, but in the end, I relied on faith—and a supportive group of men who were there to help.

The beauty of holding space in situations like these is realizing that I can’t control everything—not comets, tidal waves, volcanoes, other people, or even the weather.

Sometimes, it's okay to be angry.

Unexpressed anger can lead to disastrous consequences when not properly released. So why not scream, yell, stomp your feet, or shake your body to let it out? Just be mindful not to do it while waiting in line at Starbucks or directing it towards someone working an eight-hour shift or behind the wheel!

When I get angry, I often have to step back and remind myself of two things: am I afraid of losing control, or am I afraid of rejection? It’s possible that I’m not speaking up or asking for what I need. I mean there are times in my life, I have no idea what the f**k I need?

Redirecting my anger can be a powerful way to become more creative, sensual, active, and spiritual.

Anger isn't bad, but it can become destructive if bottled up. Finding healthy ways to express it and let it go is important.

Scream, yell, run fast, paint, shake, and let everyone around you know that you are angry and you don't need them to do jack s**t, this is not a fix-it by someone else situation.

Underneath that ANGER onion peel is sadness, powerlessness, shame, anxiety, inadequacy, and isolation. Maybe even depression. So why don't you express your anger?

Bearing the weight of Shame

Shame is a powerful emotion that can feel overwhelming, almost like a bullet train rushing through the body. It often arrives suddenly, uninvited, and takes hold, spreading through every part of our being. Much like a skipping record on a turntable stuck on the same note, shame can replay the same painful thoughts and feelings repeatedly, trapping us in a loop of self-criticism and doubt. This intensity can make us feel incredibly heavy, weighed down by an invisible burden.

The origins of shame are complex; it can seem to come out of nowhere, yet it always has a source. Sometimes, shame is triggered by specific events where we believe we've failed to meet our or others' expectations. Other times, it emerges from deep-seated fears of being judged or perceived as dishonorable, immoral, or improper.
