Equinox staff attended the Schenectady YWCA "Take Back the Night" march on October 19th during Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) to support survivors and raise awareness about domestic violence. That evening, from 4pm to 7pm, individuals throughout the Capital Region came to raise their voices and march through the community to advocate the importance of safe streets and homes for everyone, particularly those affected by domestic violence.

Up to 40% of domestic violence victims remain in abusive relationships, because they cannot find alternative living situations for their pets, or fear that their pets will be abused or killed if they leave them behind.

Equinox is a partner with the Safe Haven program, which is run by the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. Safe Haven places the pets of domestic violence victims at undisclosed foster care locations. By providing protection for beloved pets – who may also be in harm’s way – Safe Haven can provide the peace of mind that is needed for abuse victims to seek their own safety.

A primary cause of youth homelessness is family dysfunction in the form of domestic abuse--parental neglect, physical or s*xual abuse, family substance abuse and family violence. Prior to leaving home, 43% of youth reported being beaten by a caretaker. Many are vulnerable to s*x trafficking, and other traumatic experiences.

Equinox's Transitional Living Program for Homeless and Runaway Youth provides safe, stable housing, counseling, life skills training, goal setting and planning, connection to education/vocational training and jobs, and other support services to help youth, ages 16-21, to become healthy, self-sufficient, independent, and productive adults--achieving a brighter future.

Although the federal government recognizes 566 tribes in the US, there are only 26 domestic violence shelters nationwide providing culturally-specific services to American Indian and Alaska Native victims/survivors. Equinox's Domestic Violence Shelter, providing a safe haven to more than 270 adults and nearly 100 children each year, is open to all ages, gender identities, s*xual orientation, races, ethnicity, and creeds--including our indigenous neighbors.

Within the LGBTQ community, bis*xual women report some of the highest rates of experiencing intimate partner violence. Bis*xual men also experienced rates of r**e, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner at higher rates than their straight counterparts. A U.S. Transgender Survey found that more than half (54%) of transgender and non-binary respondents experienced intimate partner violence in their lifetimes.

Equinox hosts Police Academy Recruits as part of the Albany Police Department's Community Liaison Partnership

Last Wednesday Equinox and APD partnered together to offer an opportunity for recruits to learn more about the community and how to partner with organizations to better serve our community. During their visit, they discovered more about all of Equinox’s programs, with an emphasis on behavioral health, including our PROS (Personalized Recovery Oriented Services) program. PROS Recovery Advisor, Susan Friedman, spoke about the program and answered questions.

The highlight of the session was when Shirley, a PROS client, shared her story and mentored the recruits on how to best approach and work with people with mental health disorders and addictions, so it’s a less threatening or unfavorable experience for both the officers and the person with the disorder. It was such a positive afternoon with great “take-aways” for both APD and Equinox.

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO SUPPORT MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH!

equinoxinc.org/donate

Equinox has long been a vital community resource for mental health services, particularly for those with very limited financial means. Mental health challenges, especially when untreated, can lead to negative outcomes for individuals and the community. Substance abuse, chronic health problems, strained relationships, difficulty maintaining employment, increased healthcare costs, and a reduced quality of life contribute to the pain of those living with mental health disorders.

Together, we can face this mental health crisis, and strengthen our clients’ and our community’s overall wellness.

From all of us at Equinox, thank you for your commitment to all we do.

As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, Equinox's PROS (Personalized Recovery Oriented Services)held a special celebration to honor participant's personal accomplishments. People spoke about being clean and sober for one year, moving out of a community residence into an apartment, letting go of anger, feeling wanted and needed and able to stop drinking, getting certified as a NYS peer specialist and getting a job with NYAPRS, no self harm in eight months, not returning to prison, and finally feeling safe enough to tell everyone I am a transgender woman.

Everyday it is hard work to move forward and aspire to be better. We acknowledge all of these accomplishments and the challenges that came along the way. You can get help, be healthy and well.

05/12/2023

Even though the need is greater than ever before, Americans are finding it difficult to access mental health care. People lack the same access to mental health providers as they have for other medical providers. And when they can find a mental health professional, many are forced to go out-of-network to do so. This leads to people incurring higher out-of-pocket costs, and it may lead to them seeking less care—or going without any care at all. This can have a serious negative impact on the individual and their families. People need access to mental health care.

• Spending time in nature is linked to many positive mental health outcomes, including improved focus, lower stress, better mood, reduced risk of developing mental health conditions, and a sense of connection to yourself, community, and purpose.
• Being around nature doesn’t have to mean hiking in a forest. It can be walking in a park, bringing a plant inside, or sitting in your backyard.
