Tinnitus Awareness Week is the perfect time to learn why you might be hearing ringing or buzzing that others cannot. Understanding how your brain creates these sounds is the first step toward finding some peace and quiet.

Tinnitus is defined as the experience of hearing sound without an external, acoustic source. While it is commonly referred to as “ringing in the ears,” tinnitus can also be described as buzzing, hissing, whistling, swooshing, and clicking.

Finding Your Passion

As a Clinical Doctor of Audiology for the past 15 years I have had the privilege of helping hundreds of individuals with hearing loss. My experience in both private practice diagnosing hearing loss and dispensing hearing aids and my work with the New York State Police Academy for 15 years has given me an appreciation for how I found my true calling to be an Audiologist.

My path to become a Doctor of Audiology and find my true passion was not your typical route. I’d been working in TV for several years with Showtime and Walt Disney, but never had satisfaction in my work. I always had the feeling I wanted to make a difference and help people but didn’t know what I wanted. On a whim, I signed up to take a Career Focusing Class, hoping it would help me figure out what I wanted to do. After completing the 6 week class I was presented an envelope with 3 careers I was told matched my personality and desires. As I opened the envelope and glanced down at the sheet listing my dream jobs it read a Priest, a Rabbi or an Audiologist. I thought to myself, Oh My God, this sounds like a joke! I immediately knew some things wouldn’t work for me. I’m married so a Priest is out, I’m not Jewish so that's out and what is an Audiologist? As I researched into my own real possibility, an Audiologist, I realized this might be something for me. I’d be helping people who were hard of hearing. I took a class in Audiology and I was hooked! I quit my job, returned to school for 8 years, and got my degree in Audiology and I have never looked back. As I like to tell people, the day I started in Audiology was the day I found my passion and stopped working. I’ve never had a day I felt dread or didn’t want to show up to the office.

The point of my story is that unless we try something new things will never change and we will never discover new joys in life. It’s easy to get stuck in our daily routine and keep doing what we know. Change can be scary. It doesn’t have to be as dramatic as a career but try something simple, a new type of food, or say hello to someone you frequently see at the gym. Nelson Mandela said it best, “There is no passion to be found in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” So try something new today, you may discover your passion or a new interest by making a small change.
