It's finally here! April is National Donate Life Month.
During National Donate Life Month in April, we honor the people who have given the gift of life through organ, eye and tissue donation. We also celebrate the lives that have been saved and healed because of a donor’s generosity.

This year’s theme uses trees as a symbol of life and connection. Just like trees grow and support each other in a forest, donation connects people – donors, recipients, and their families. Like a tree that grows and stands for generations, a donor’s gift leaves a lasting legacy of hope and life.

Your decision to be an organ, eye and tissue donor gives hope to the 100,000 people on the national organ transplant waiting list who are waiting for a second chance at life.

During National Donate Life Month (NDLM) and throughout the year, join us in helping save and heal lives by: registering your decision to be an organ, eye and tissue donor, learning more about living donation, and supporting the Donate Life cause.

Get out in your local community and on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and DonateLife.net to help us honor donors, recipients, and their families and caregivers. Send your pictures to laussicker@cdtny.org πŸ’™πŸ’š

Did you know?
Approximately 90,000 to over 100,000 Americans are on the national transplant waiting list for a kidney at any given time, representing about 86-90% of the total organ transplant waiting list. While over 800,000 people have end-stage renal disease (ESKD), roughly 12-13% are on the active transplant waiting list.
You can register to be a donor at www.cdtnyvt.org πŸ’™πŸ’š

Meet Ashley Suah, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery, Transplant Surgeon at University of Chicago Medicine.
Dr. Ashley Suah is a transplant surgeon and educator committed to advancing equitable access to lifesaving transplantation for Black patients and underserved communities. As one of only 13 Black female transplant surgeons nationwide, her work reflects both clinical excellence and a deep commitment to addressing disparities in care.
In her clinical practice, Dr. Suah performs complex abdominal transplant surgeries while also serving as a strong advocate for her patients. She prioritizes patient education, ensuring individuals and families understand their diagnosis, treatment options, and post-transplant care so they can make informed decisions throughout the transplant process.
Beyond the operating room, Dr. Suah is dedicated to medical education and mentorship. She actively supports the training and development of medical students, residents, and fellows, helping to strengthen the future of the transplant workforce.
Community engagement is a central part of Dr. Suah’s work. She partners with the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois and regularly visits community centers and churches on Chicago’s South Side to educate residents about kidney and liver health, disease prevention, and the lifesaving impact of organ donation. These efforts help bring trusted medical expertise directly into the community.
Dr. Suah emphasizes the importance of open dialogue and empowerment in healthcare. She encourages individuals to ask questions, learn the signs of kidney and liver disease, and feel confident navigating the transplant process. Through her presence, outreach, and advocacy, she helps build trust in healthcare systems and improves access to transplantation for Black communities.
