As we prepare to close out Public Health Week, we thank all of our students who lit up the Gozzo Atrium with their public health messaging this past Thursday.

The presentations offered helpful tips on everything from sleep and mental health to digital wellness and the environment, as well as an informative workshop on health equity.

Thank you also to President Tofade and Russell Sage President Shaftel for stopping by!

Kudos to The Collaboratory at ACPHS Director and Professor, Stacy Pettigrew PhD, who recently was a panelist at the DEC’s 2026 Women’s History Month Lunch and Learn event, “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future.”

Dr. Pettigrew, who is also co-founder and executive director for the Radix Ecological Sustainability Center, shared her research and programmatic work around environmental and food justice. The Radix Center teaches the local community how to reclaim control over essential resources, like food and water, using sustainable and regenerative practices. Atmospheric justice initiatives, biocultural diversity forest plantings, community composting, poultry farming, and river remediation are among Radix's sustainability programs.

Pace University Professor Achinthi Vithanage, who serves as the Executive Director of the Environmental Law Program, also supported the DEC’s program with Dr. Pettigrew. She discussed the importance of thinking globally when we are acting locally and being curious about other parts of the world for a comparative analysis.

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Tonia Wheeler, both women “personify true leadership, creativity and compassion…and are appreciated for shaping a sustainable future and making the world a better place.”

For some of us, COVID seems like a lifetime ago. But six years later, some are asking, is it still important to get the COVID vaccine?

Associate Professor of Microbiology, Dr. Eric Yager spoke with Emily Laurence for Parade magazine piece on this topic.

According to the infectious disease expert, while is no longer the pandemic-level threat it was six years ago, “it remains a constant public health concern. COVID-19 continues to circulate and infect individuals, causing severe illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths.”

This piece lands perfectly with National Public Health Week observance happening now through April 12.

According to the CDC, during the 2024-25 season, COVID-19 was associated with:

➡️ 290,000-450,000 hospitalizations
➡️ 34,000-53,000 deaths

Drs. Benjamin and Bernard Graham ’71 built the foundation for a new international clinical rotation in Guatemala for ACPHS pharmacy students.

Last spring, Ty Rheaume ’25 and Christina Jung '25 experienced their dream rotation come true, alongside alumnas Associate Professor Dr. Kate Cabral and Dr. Emily Persson ’24.

Ty and Christine conceded they were spent at the end of each day. Yet they described the rotation, the last one before their Commencement, as a grand finale. In part, that was because they were allowed to put their full array of skills to practice, more than they might have been allowed at a U.S. clinic.

“This was way above and beyond my expectations,” Dr. Jung said. “I was counseling patients. I was administering antibiotics to patients, especially kids.”

Professor Tom Lodise, PharmD, PhD, will conduct a large, real-world study focused on the national burden, resistance landscape, and unmet medical needs associated with complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs) caused by Enterobacterales.

“cUTIs represent one of the most common and costly infection-related reasons for hospitalization in the United States, accounting for nearly 600,000 hospital admissions annually and billions of dollars in health-care expenditures,” said Lodise, who also serves as the College’s Rudolph J. and Dorothy A. Blythe Endowed Research Chair for Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Lodise will collaborate on the study with Basilea Pharmaceutica, a 25-year-old Swiss-based organization that develops and commercializes innovative pharmaceutical products to meet the medical needs of patients with severe and life-threatening bacterial and fungal infections.
