💙 September is Women in Medicine Month 💙

At Capital Cardiology Associates, we’re proud to celebrate the women who bring skill, science, and compassion to patient care every day.

Abbey L., RN, BSN, reminds us that nursing is grounded in STEM—science, technology, engineering, and math, but it’s also guided by heart. From evidence-based care to advanced technology, nurses blend innovation with compassion to make a real difference for patients.

This month, we’re asking our team why they believe young women and girls should pursue STEM-based careers. Their stories highlight the impact of curiosity, learning, and care in shaping both the lives of their patients and the future of medicine.

Join us as we honor the women who inspire, lead, and care in healthcare.

Capital Cardiology Associates Expands Cardiac Imaging Capabilities with Installation of GE Omni PET/CT System

ALBANY, NY – Capital Cardiology Associates (CCA) is proud to announce the installation of the GE Omni PET/CT scanner, the most advanced Positron Emission Tomography (PET) technology currently available, now in operation for Cardiac PET/CT scans. This upgrade marks a significant advancement in CCA’s mission to deliver innovative, non-invasive cardiac imaging solutions that lead to faster, more accurate diagnoses.

“At Capital Cardiology Associates, we are committed to staying at the forefront of cardiovascular care,” said Dr. Lance Sullenberger, CEO of Capital Cardiology Associates. “The addition of the state-of-the-art GE Omni PET/CT scanner to our diagnostic capabilities represents a major step forward in our ability to detect coronary artery disease with greater precision and speed. This advanced technology delivers superior image quality while reducing both scan time and radiation exposure for our patients. Over the next six months, we will be upgrading all of our PET/CT scanners to the GE Omni platform, ensuring that patients across our entire network have access to the most advanced non-invasive cardiac imaging available. These enhancements will help us detect heart disease earlier, individualize treatment plans, and continue improving outcomes for the communities we serve.”

This expansion has been made possible through CCA’s ongoing partnership with CDL Nuclear Technologies, which leases and supports the advanced imaging units across several CCA locations. CDL’s collaboration has played a key role in enabling Capital Cardiology to maintain its commitment to delivering cutting-edge diagnostic tools directly to patients throughout the Capital Region.

The GE Omni scanner brings enhanced image sensitivity and exceptional workflow efficiency, offering a better overall experience for patients and more actionable insights for clinicians. Its intelligent design supports precise patient positioning and accommodates a wide range of evolving clinical protocols, giving technologists and physicians the flexibility they need to meet the highest standards of cardiovascular care.

“This investment reflects our continued commitment to innovation and excellence in cardiac imaging,” said Kyle Brownell, Director of Diagnostic Imaging at CCA. “As a Nuclear Medicine Technologist, I’m proud and excited for our team to begin using this new system. It allows us to deliver compassionate care while utilizing state-of-the-art technology to support critical decision-making.”

Since becoming the first provider in the Capital Region to offer Cardiac PET/CT imaging in 2017, Capital Cardiology has led the way in non-invasive diagnostics. Unlike traditional nuclear imaging, Cardiac PET offers superior clarity and accuracy while significantly reducing exam time. It plays a vital role in assessing coronary artery disease and myocardial blood flow, often eliminating the need for more invasive procedures.

The installation of the GE Omni is part of a broader initiative to standardize advanced cardiac imaging across all CCA sites that offer Cardiac PET/CT. This effort ensures consistent quality, diagnostic precision, and continuity of care throughout the network.

With this latest upgrade, Capital Cardiology Associates continues to deliver on its promise: combining innovation, expertise, and patient-centered care to advance cardiovascular health in the communities it serves.

Capital Cardiology Associates’ Enhanced Cardiac Rehab Program Earns National Certification

ALBANY, NY – Capital Cardiology Associates (CCA) has announced that its Enhanced Cardiac Rehabilitation program has officially received national certification from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). The recognition highlights the program’s rapid growth and success since launching just three years ago.

Certification from AACVPR is a rigorous, peer-reviewed process that evaluates a program’s clinical practices, outcomes, and adherence to nationally recognized standards for cardiac rehabilitation. For CCA, the accreditation signifies a meaningful achievement in its commitment to delivering comprehensive, evidence-based care.

Larissa DiPace, MS, RN, ACSM-CEP, who manages the Enhanced Cardiac Rehab team, praised her colleagues for making it happen.

“I’m incredibly proud of our team and the hard work that led to achieving our AACVPR certification,” said DiPace. “This accomplishment reflects our consistent dedication to patient-centered care and our alignment with CCA’s mission to deliver innovative and compassionate cardiac care. Reaching this milestone in just three years is a remarkable achievement and a true testament to the passion, expertise, and excellence of our entire team.”

CCA’s Enhanced Cardiac Rehab program is based on the nationally recognized Pritikin model, a lifestyle-centered approach that goes far beyond traditional rehab. In addition to medically supervised exercise, patients participate in hands-on nutrition classes, cooking demonstrations, and workshops focused on stress management and sustainable heart health.

“Reaching this milestone didn’t happen overnight. It reflects countless hours of preparation, collaboration, and a deep commitment to excellence,” said Caitlin Lobdell, RN, BSN, Director of Nursing. “The Cardiac Rehab team here at CCA have truly set the bar for what it means to lead with heart and purpose.”

Dr. Kevin Woods, Medical Director of CCA’s Enhanced Cardiac Rehab program, emphasized the program’s real-world impact.

“I am extremely proud of our ECR team in earning this recognition. Patient feedback has been great. Their compassionate care has helped our patients recover from cardiac events and continues to empower them to understand the impact their commitment to lifestyle can bring to their quality of life!”

The program is available to patients recovering from heart attack, bypass surgery, angioplasty, stent placement, valve repair or replacement, chronic heart failure, or heart transplant. With personalized exercise plans, clinical oversight, and lifestyle education, each patient receives care tailored to their condition and recovery goals.

Weekly cooking classes like “Fast and Healthy Breakfasts” and “One-Pot Wonders” help patients and their families gain practical skills they can use at home. The goal is to support long-term change, not just short-term recovery.

“Cardiac rehab is a time-tested, proven, and well-established component of recovery from a heart event, yet traditionally, the focus has been solely on exercise,” said DiPace. “That’s why we’re proud to partner with Pritikin ICR to offer a truly comprehensive experience that strengthens every facet of our patients’ well-being.”

The AACVPR certification places CCA’s Enhanced Cardiac Rehab program among the best in the field, confirming the team’s ability to deliver safe, effective care rooted in current best practices.

“The incredible achievement of being awarded the AACVPR Certification is a true result of the dedication, passion, and hard work of an exceptional team that continuously goes above and beyond to deliver the highest standard of care to our patients,” added DiPace.

For patients and providers across the Capital Region, the certification is another sign that CCA continues to raise the bar in cardiac care.
