The New York State Dental Foundation made its first visits to Otsego County Head Start in Oneonta over the past few weeks to kick off the Early Head Start Oral Health Prevention Project, funded by the NYS Head Start Collaboration Office. Christine, our Community Dental Health Coordinator, was able to screen 9 children, and provided an education session for 5 teachers.
We heard from one teacher about a family of 6 (soon to be 7) living in a shed without running water, and another family battling bed bugs at home. So many difficult situations, but we are hopeful that our presence and these screenings will keep oral health top of mind for parents so that children don’t have bigger dental issues down the road.
The average ER visit for children with oral health issues last year cost $13,000. Multiply that times about 350 children and it's a cost of over $4.5M at one New York State dental clinic alone.
We appreciate your continued support, which enables us to invest in programs like this - screening the infants, toddlers, children, and pregnant moms who need us most!
