Our history spotlight looks at PARC v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania ARC, now called The Arc of Pennsylvania, sued Pennsylvania on behalf of families of children denied public education due to their I/DD. The case ultimately decided that no child could be denied a free public education due to their disability, being the first major legal case involving equality in education for those with disabilities.

Bohring-Opitz Syndrome is an incredibly rare condition marked by developmental delays and recurring respiratory illnesses, often resulting in death. Only about 300 cases have been reported globally, but given the general lack of understanding about the condition, that number is almost certainly higher.

Is Bias Holding Your Nonprofit Back? Tackle Implicit Bias this April

April is National Diversity Month, as well as National Arab-American Awareness and Autism Awareness Month. While many human services organizations are committed to embracing diversity in their community, we often see professionals fail to address their biases. Implicit bias, or more accurately defined as racism and prejudice, negatively impacts a nonprofit's ability to achieve its mission and help the people it serves, wasting organizational resources with biased decision-making and preventing a culture of belonging.

For diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) committee members, April is a great month to encourage your organization to engage in implicit bias assessments, especially since our community has a history of unfair biases towards Arab-Americans and Autistic people. Celebrating these awareness months feels performative if you are not helping your team members improve their competencies.

In our DEIB Toolkit, you can check out resources on bias, privilege, and common racist attitudes to help assess bias, process harm caused, educate your leaders, and organize inclusive strategies.

Check out this graphic, adapted from a framework of the National Equity Project, and explore more strategies to utilize this month by accessing the toolkit on the Regional Centers for Workforce Transformation's website.

The 504 sit-ins began this week in 1977, marking one of the biggest disability rights protests in US history. The sit-ins, particularly the one in San Francisco, saw people with disabilities occupy federal buildings to force long-delayed regulations for Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, then the biggest piece of disability rights legislation, to be enforced.

For almost 20 years, World Autism Awareness Day has been promoting the equal participation of those with autism on a global level. This year’s theme, “Every Life Has Value”, urges fighting against misinformation and harmful rhetoric that limits who autistic people can be and what they can do.
