Neural Stem Cell Institute

Neural Stem Cell Institute The Neural Stem Cell Institute (NSCI) is dedicated to developing regenerative stem cell therapies for various diseases of the central nervous system.

Our Unique Organization

The Neural Stem Cell Institute (NSCI) is dedicated to developing regenerative stem cell therapies for various diseases of the central nervous system (CNS): the brain, spinal cord and retina, regardless of the cause of injury. Led by MacArthur β€œGenius” Award winner Dr. Sally Temple who helped discover and define nervous system stem cells, NSCI is the first independent, non-

profit stem cell research institute in the USA. With a state of the art laboratory fully equipped to generate breakthrough discoveries, NSCI employs more than 25 leading stem cell researchers who take a multi-disciplinary approach to neural stem cell research. In addition to in-house research, NSCI provides other leading neural stem cell researchers from around the world the funding, know-how, and access to international partnerships to expedite the translation of their discovery into real-world therapies for CNS repair.

Available now at Stem Cell Reports: Our study led by Farhad Farjood, Nathan Boles and Jeffrey Stern reveals the surprising heterogeneity of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells in the human eye using single cell transcriptomics and proteomics. Using the cell surface proteins identified with BioLegend's CITE-seq panel, we describe unique spatial patterns that suggest functional differences for RPE subpopulations in the eye.

This work was supported by the National Eye Institute and Luxa Biotechnology LLC.

Farjood et al. has set the stage for characterizing RPE heterogeneity by using single-cell sequencing technology to identify cell surface markers compatible with isolating each subpopulation for further study. Using these markers, select RPE subpopulations are shown to have unique localization withi...
