The Bite
Raising a child with developmental disabilities can be quite a roller coaster ride. Our son Scott can be quiet and loving. He can also get lost in an ocean of angst and let everyone know that something is very wrong with the world. At home we have tried and true ways to disrupt this behavior. On vacation – not so much.
If you’ve ever been to Martha’s Vineyard, I hope that you’ve had a chance to eat at The Bite in Menemsha Harbor. The Bite is a little shack that makes the best fried clams, oysters, scallops and shrimp that have that perfect blend of taste and texture that melts in your mouth and has you coming back again and again for more. If you’ve been there you know that there’s always a line of people waiting for their fried seafood fix.
On a visit to the Vineyard many years ago, we drove up in anticipation to The Bite and, as usual, there was a pretty long line of folks placing orders and then milling around waiting for their number to be called. So we waited patiently to place our order and join the crowd. Well, we were mostly patient, but patience was never Scott’s strong suit and clearly he was getting agitated having to wait.
As we stood there prepared to wait for however long it took to get our clams, we kept our fingers crossed that Scott’s agitation wouldn’t turn into a meltdown. We were only standing there a couple of minutes when one of the ladies from The Bite came over to us with a bag of French fries and said ‘maybe he’d like some of these while he’s waiting’ then hurried back inside to the chaos of the shack. We never knew her name – she didn’t know ours, but even after many (many) years I can tell you with certainty that those were the best French fries we ever had.
