As we close our New Year, New Habits series, we want to leave you with one of the most important habits for your urology health: annual screenings.

Routine checkups and screenings help detect issues early, monitor ongoing conditions, and give you peace of mind about your urinary and kidney health. Whether it’s a prostate exam, kidney function testing, or bladder health follow-ups, staying proactive is one of the best ways to prevent problems before they start. 🩺

Your urinary system works hard for you every day, make 2026 the year you prioritize preventive care.

At Albany Urology, we take a careful approach to diagnosing UTIs. We start by reviewing your symptoms, then analyze a urine sample to check for infection. If needed, a urine culture can identify the exact bacteria so we can tailor treatment.

For recurrent or persistent infections, additional testing like imaging or cystoscopy may be recommended to check for underlying issues. Proper diagnosis is the first step toward effective, long-term care.

Welcome back to our New Year, New Habits series, simple steps to support your urology health in 2026.

This week, we’re focusing on movement. Regular physical activity helps improve blood flow to the kidneys, supports healthy blood pressure, reduces inflammation, and can lower your risk for kidney stones. Staying active also supports bladder function and overall metabolic health.

You don’t need intense workouts; even daily walking, stretching, or light strength training can make a meaningful difference. 🚶‍♂️🧘‍♀️

Small, consistent movement keeps your whole body, including your urinary system, functioning at its best.

10 days short of completing 16 years as Administrator of Albany Urology Clinic & Surgery Center. So many things to be thankful for. Here’s a snapshot of a few…

1. Staff: it’s said you don’t have to be the smartest, but surround yourself with smart, caring people, they’ll make you look good. By far, I have worked with the most caring, smart people.
2. Providers: every Physician, nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant, truly some of the most caring people I’ve ever worked with and been around. You often have to tell people the scariest words like cancer, but you do it with Grace and hope.
3. Administrative Assistant: Michele, someone that will go through a brick wall for a patient, providers and co-workers. I’ve witnessed behind the scenes the tens of thousands of dollars she’s secured for veterans that had nothing and she finds help for. Not a bigger heart in the building.
4. Patients and families: thank you for trusting Albany Urology Clinic and Surgery Center with your care. We do not take it for granted.
5. 16 years, never a day we didn’t get to laugh.
6. Thankful that I’ve had the opportunity to pray with so many and to be prayed for.
7. Thanks for trusting me.
8. Thankful for the hour drive to and from to be able to pray, think and process both easy and tough decisions.
9. Did I mention my staff?? They’re worth mentioning again, the most thoughtful caring souls.
10. Lord willing, if I make it home and get through today… for 16 years, twice a day, I’ll have never been stopped by the Poulan police for speeding. .

I’m not retiring, but been given an opportunity to work with another group of great people. Excited for the next chapter.

Here’s a few pictures of my last day! Doesn’t everyone look good in their vest! Had I known how good they would all look, I should have made it standard uniform!

Michael

Welcome back to our New Year, New Habits series, simple steps to support your urology health in 2026.

This week, we’re focusing on lowering sodium. A high-sodium diet can strain your kidneys, increase blood pressure, and contribute to kidney stone formation. Reducing salt in your diet doesn’t just help your heart - it plays a major role in protecting your urinary system too. 🥗

Your kidneys work hard for you every day. Lowering sodium helps lighten the load.

Your urine can reveal a lot about your hydration and urinary health.

Here’s a quick guide to what different colors may indicate:
• Pale yellow: Well-hydrated, healthy
• Dark yellow / amber: Mild dehydration, drink more water
• Orange: Could be dehydration, certain medications, or liver issues
• Pink / red: Could indicate blood — see a doctor promptly
• Brown: Possible liver problems or dehydration
• Cloudy / murky: May signal infection or excess protein

Pay attention to changes in color, especially if it’s sudden, persistent, or accompanied by pain or discomfort. Early detection and care are key to preventing UTIs and other urinary problems. 💧
