Graduate nursing students may soon face lower federal loan caps under a new Department of Education proposal, and nursing is currently excluded from the definition of “professional degree” programs. The New York State Department of Health has opened the NANY Loan Repayment Program – State Agencies Cycle 1 Solicitation of Interest.

This opportunity is available to registered nurses and licensed practical nurses who provide direct clinical care to underserved and traditionally disenfranchised populations served by the following state agencies:

• Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS)
• Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS)
• Office of Mental Health (OMH)
• Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS)
• Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD)

The American Nurses Association (ANA) has issued a statement urging the U.S. Department of Education to revise its proposed federal loan policy changes, which currently exclude nursing from the definition of “professional degree” programs.

This change would limit access to essential federal loan funding for graduate nursing education at a time when the nation is facing a historic nursing shortage.

ANA emphasizes that restricting loan eligibility threatens efforts to grow and sustain the nursing workforce, especially in rural and underserved communities where advanced practice nurses are vital.
