Happy Women in Medicine Month! 🏥🩺❤️🩹
Throughout the month, St. Peter's has turned the spotlight on women in our health care system for their pivotal roles in advancing careers in medicine. From doctors to nurses, and from residents to medical students, the women at St. Peter's - like Dr. Priyangika Pathirana - are shaping the future of health care.
“Women have always been healers, and even today they continue to care for others with strength and compassion, often while facing many challenges.
I come from a country where medicine has long been regarded as the noblest profession — a calling to ease the suffering of others. It felt natural for me to dream of becoming a doctor.
From Sri Lanka to the United States, my journey in medicine has not always been easy — but it has been deeply rewarding. I could not imagine choosing any other profession.
As a doctor, I am often asked about the proudest moment in my career. The truth is — I don’t have just one. My greatest pride comes from the everyday moments: easing a patient’s pain, offering comfort in difficult times, or giving hope when it’s most needed. It is in these small but meaningful encounters that I find the true privilege of being a physician. As a woman I feel special connection with patients, and that makes my work even more meaningful.
To everyone who has chosen this path of healing: it is your passion, commitment, and dedication that will guide you, sustain you, and bring you true fulfillment. I feel really proud to be a woman in medicine, today and tomorrow.”
