As a family doc, in my own family, I’m the go to person whenever anyone has a sniffle, needs some stitches, or wants a look over their labs. 🏠👩🏻‍⚕️📞

This morning, when my son wasn’t using his arm and I knew it was likely nursemaid’s elbow, I didn’t need to drop everything to go to urgent care or wait until the pediatricians office opened for generic advice from a nurse line. A quick exam, a simple reduction, and he was back to himself within minutes. I took care of him right there. ⚡️

This convenience and peace of mind that someone is in your corner, is available, and can help you is what I want for every family in the Capital Region of New York.

At Heirloom Family Medicine, Dr. Meghan Monthie treats you like family. A direct primary care (DPC aka concierge-level care for normal people), we’re accepting new patients who want to experience what healthcare feels like without the rush, anonymity, and runaround.

If you’ve been searching for care that feels like having a doctor in the family, I’m your family physician!

‼️ In case you missed it: not everything you’re consuming on social media is helpful or true.

A lot of health advice online comes from folks with a ring light, an affiliate link, and a boatload of confidence but no formal education, training, licensure, board certification, or regulatory body keeping them in check.

They can’t examine you, diagnose you, or recognize when something subtle or sinister is actually serious.
And they’re not responsible for what happens next.

Your health is too important for unfounded “it worked for me” advice and a discount code.
You deserve nuance, context, relationship, and accountability in care that comes from a physician who went to school and trained for 10+ years to listen closely, think critically, interpret the research, synthesize your data and symptoms, and apply it to your life.

Your health isn’t a trend, and your care shouldn’t be either.
If you’ve been piecing together your wellness routine from Instagram influencers and TikTok searches, there’s a better way to do it.
The direct primary care model (aka DPC or concierge-style medicine at an affordable rate) provides an unhurried, thoughtful, and personalized approach to your health from someone who trained years to guide you through it. 💛

“Do you take my insurance?”
“What if I have Medicare/Medicaid/no insurance?”
“But I have good insurance.”
🙋🏻‍♀️❓🤔

Okay friends, let’s talk about the good stuff, starting with insurance questions.

Questions about how Heirloom pairs with health insurance are some of the first (and very reasonable) things people ask when I talk about direct primary care (DPC) membership (aka concierge-level care for everyday people).
For most of us, insurance has always been the way we access care, so the idea of doing things differently can feeling confusing and let’s be a real - a little uncomfy.

➡️ Swipe to see answers to the most common questions I get about how insurance works with DPC.

If you’re in the Albany, NY area and looking for a primary care doctor who is accepting new patients who sees you as more than just the number on your insurance card (or offers affordable self-pay options if you don’t have insurance), you’re in the right place 💛

And if you’ve still got questions? Perfect, Dr. Meghan Monthie has answers.

pov: your multidisciplinary healthcare team *gets* it 🤝👯‍♀️👩🏻‍⚕️👏

There’s a version of healthcare where your doctor and your pelvic PT actually talk to each other and genuinely respect what the other brings to your care (…and also mediocrely lip sync to songs together in between patients 😅).
That version of healthcare lives at 12 Metro Park Road in Albany, NY, the and Heirloom Family Medicine home base! 🏠

I love having DPTs Carin & Courtney right down the hall to curbside for advice and guidance on all things pelvic health (hint: they help patients overcome a LOT more than urinary incontinence), and they have helped SO many of my patients feel more connected to their bodies.

Collaborative care is better care. ❤️

Finding a primary care doctor who really gets you can feel like looking for a needle in a haystack. 🧐🔎

But good primary care isn’t just about credentials or checkboxes. How you feel in the care of your P*P counts for a lot, too!

Do you feel heard?
Can you actually reach your doctor when you need them?
Do you leave visits feeling clear, confident, and supported?

These are the real green flags of a strong patient/doctor relationship and honestly the foundation of what primary care should be.

If this hasn’t been your experience, you’re not alone. So many patients have been taught to expect rushed visits, long waits, and fragmented care.

The direct primary care (DPC) model pushes back on the nonsense with longer visits, better access, and care that’s actually centered around you.

✨ If you’re looking for a primary care doctor in Albany, NY with all the green flags, I’d love to connect.

A year ago, I was leaving the house before 7AM.
Trying to squeeze 22+ patients a day into 15 minute appointments.
Rushing home to make bedtime then logging back on for hours of notes and messages.

I was giving everything I had to a system that didn’t value me and my 15 years of training and experience at the expense of my husband, children, and self.

And somehow, my patients weren’t any healthier for it. 🫠

The straw that broke the camel’s back?
Last year’s National Doctors Day came and went without a single acknowledgement from my employer.
No celebratory breakfast or weeklong celebration like they performed for APP Day and Nurses Week.
No e-mail.
No thank you.
Just my toddler crying “No mama go to work” as I walked out the door.

That was the “oh shoot” moment it clicked: I’m replaceable everywhere except at home.

So I said a prayer, put in my notice the next day, and started planting seeds for something different.

A practice where patients
✨Take their time
✨ Can afford high quality healthcare regardless of insurance coverage
✨ Get care when, where, and how they need it
✨ Are known as people first, diagnoses second
✨ Have a doctor with the time, energy, and clarify to truly care

I opened Heirloom Family Medicine (a direct primary care/DPC practice aka concierge-style care at an affordable price) in Albany, NY 6 months ago, and haven’t look back since. ❤️

This National Doctor’s Day, I’m not waiting to be celebrated.
I’m celebrating a life and practice that finally feel aligned.

If you’ve been searching for this kind of care in the Capital Region of NY, I’d love to meet you!

There is a level of exhaustion in early postpartum that’s hard to put into words, and I didn’t fully appreciate it until I went through it myself. 🥱😵‍💫

So when you say “I haven’t slept in 3 days,” I *get* you. And I painstakingly understand how this can affect your physical healing, milk supply, mood, relationships, and ability to mother. And also…we need to talk about this!

Here are some real talk ways to help you navigate this exhausting fourth trimester:

➗Divide the night into shifts if you have a partner
Even one protected 4-5 hour stretch of sleep can make you feel like a new person. This might look like one person tackling feeds before 2AM, the other after. If you’re breastfeeding, feed your little one and then hand off baby to your partner to do the rest.

🤲 Bring in extra hands
A postpartum doula (soooo many fabulous PP doulas in the area - looking at you !), night nurse, or trusted family member a few nights a week can be transformational.

💆🏻‍♀️Rethink “sleep when the baby sleeps”If you can’t fall sleep, intentional rest can also be powerful- lie down, close your eyes, or anything else that feels restorative.

🧺Lighten the invisible load
Look for anything you can outsource to take tasks off your plate: meal delivery (our family loves ; specializes in postpartum meals), grocery delivery, cleaning help even once or twice can add up to save you precious time and energy.

✨ Say yes to help…and use it to restIf friends or family offer to come by, take them up on it. Let them hold baby, fold the laundry, or take over for a bit while you nap, shower, or lie down. Don’t host or entertain. Sleep!

✨ Bring the doctor to youIf getting to an appointment when you can barely keep your eyes open and remember to brush your teeth feels overwhelming, in-home postpartum and newborn visits might be for you! I love meeting families at home in these early days to check in on all things baby but also to support you in your home.
